DANIEL'S POVToday was a sickly day— coughs, sneezes and body aches. I get out of my bed and drag myself down the stairs to welcome my visitors. My mom told me my friends were here. I missed school today and I'm sure Boma has come to entertain me. He is like my brother from another mother, a great friend. My mom meets me in the corridor and her face lights up.
"Finally, you're out of your room. How's your body now?"
"It still hurts."
"Sorry my dear. You'll be fine soon," she wraps me in a warm hug. "Your friends are waiting for you in the game room."
I nod. She leaves and immediately, I start sneezing and coughing.
"Sorry," someone says in a disoriented voice. I glance up and choke on my saliva. I cough some more and she rushes over and pats my back. I rub my chest and take a step away. Sam?
"Sorry," she whispers.
I scan her from head to toe and raise a brow at her. She understands my look and rolls her eyes. I expected that but what I didn't expect is the warmth and kindness swimming in her eyes and she looks at me.
"How are you—" she pauses.
"Daniel!" Boma exclaims as he walks into the corridor. He engulfs me in a hug and we do our favorite handshake. He chuckles and kneads the muscles on my shoulder. "How are you feeling now?"
"Better," I reply. Anna shows up too and my jaw drops. Aside from Boma, I definitely didn't expect my visitors to be two girls. Anna smiles sheepishly.
"Hi," she says. "Just wanted to check up on you. We all missed you in school. Our best Head boy.""Nope! She came to frustrate me," Boma snaps, eying her.
I chortle. Tom and Jerry are here today. I hope I survive. I head to the game room, doing my best to ignore Sam's presence. She broke my heart and now I need to move on. She told me days ago that she didn't have feelings for me and admitted she used me to get to Nora. That hurts. But now, she is here. Why? Is she trying to play with my emotions again? Or to just confuse me?
I sit on the sofa and Boma begins to give me information about school. Homework and notes were waiting for me.
"
I would have loved to help you complete your note but mine isn't complete either. No vex!" Boma adds, grumbling at the thought.
"Lazy!" Anna mutters under her breath.
Boma heaves a sigh and narrows his eyes at her. She scoffs, staking Whot cards on the comfy carpet on the floor. She kneels down beside the cards. "Sam, do you want to play Whot?"
My eyes involuntarily locate her. She holds my gaze as she moves to Anna. She glances at the card and throws the question to Boma, "Would you like me to beat you or would you rather be a spectator?"
"Beat me?" He cracks his knuckles, smirking. "I don't want to see you cry today. Last time in class, didn't I beat you?"
"In your dream?" She laughs and beckons to him.
Boma turns to me. "Will you play?"
Sam's eyes meet mine and the softness in them suffocates me. Isn't this the same Sam that always had fires in her eyes when she looked at me? I remember her icy glare. And now? This?
"No!" I respond.
"Okay. Enjoy the game. Don't feel sorry for Sam when I beat her up," he says, skipping towards them.
Sam's eyes are still on me and my heartbeat erupts in my ears. I did my best to look anywhere but her. Their game begins and now, my eyes are on her. She laughs heartily during the game.
