In the waking hours of the morning, the barely raised sun blared through the glass doors of the emergency room, a cruel wind swinging open the doors, reminding two teenagers who sat with bowed heads that the storm hadn't quite passed as it brushed past their bare skins. It had been them who volunteered to hold off the cops while everyone else retreated to safety if that were possible anymore. None of them were truly safe, Scott was gone, Cora was dying, Melissa and the Sheriff had been taken, Jennifer still had one last guardian to claim, two people fitting that title, in one way or another none of them were safe, someone would end up hurt if not killed.

A word had barely been spoken between the two volunteers as they sat side by side, neither sure what they were supposed to say after what had happened, it didn't matter what aspect it was, it was hard to say anything at all. They hadn't even forged a plan of what to say that would hold off the cops, but the two of them had been in the middle of trouble long enough to spin up a web of lies at the drop of a hat. It wasn't possible to talk like things were fine, they'd been left hopeless, heartbroken, with so much still at stake. But somehow, the silence brought a sense of comfort to them both, just knowing that the other was sitting beside them was enough for both of them. It hadn't been the first time the two had sat like this, they were mirror images of themselves seven years ago, the bowed heads, sitting in a hospital corridor, waiting. The only difference was the lack of Cole beside them. Like they were then, they'd sat with one another because a parent had been taken, only seven years ago it was for much different circumstances.

Stiles had been at Noelle's house that night, Jack had offered up his night to look after the boy, offering for him to spend the night with Noelle and Cole so that Noah could work and provide for his family like he provided for his own. He didn't mind having an extra child in the house, Stiles was like a nephew to him, though Camila couldn't say the same, having her own two children in the home stressed her out enough, let alone the Stilinski boy who brought out another side to her daughter. She lacked sympathy unlike her husband, Claudia was still in the hospital with her condition worsening by the day, trying to fight through her disease, she just wasn't capable of caring for her son, especially not from a hospital bed. Jack had seen it for himself, he'd often go and visit Claudia at the hospital at the end of her shift, sometimes taking Stiles if his father was at work, he knew that Noah would do the same for Noelle and Cole if the roles were reversed.

Jack was putting the three children to bed, reading them one of his notoriously scary bedtime stories before when Camila had come in, peeking her head around the door, usually she entered the room with gust, but this time her movements were softer, a guilty look across her face, that was something never seen on the woman, emotion wasn't exactly her area of expertise. The way she had appeared at the door had told Jack everything he needed to know as he turned back to Stiles who was eager to hear how the story ended, it wasn't until they had arrived at the hospital parking lot that he realized what was going on. When Jack brought him to the hospital he didn't dwell on the reason they were there, he would make it fun, this time was different, he could see the man in the front of the car struggling to hold back tears on the drive from their house. Noah had called, promising he would meet them at the hospital, but he never did.
