Three weeks after your discussion with Pierce, you are in Bucky's experiment room (where he stays instead of the cell. There is a barrier, though, so he can't leave), talking after one of the injections.

Just then, Pierce walks in, and approaches you. "Y/n, I have a mission for you."

You stand up slowly. "W-what is it?"

He hands you a newspaper clipping, and explains while you read it. "This chemical could be what's missing from our serum. Only problem is, the only vial of it is in the middle of Sokovia."

Your eyes widen. "Sokovia? That place is war-torn!"

He nods and turns to leave. "And you can do it. You've been trained for these scenarios, Y/n."

You nod numbly, pale. Suddenly, Bucky speaks up from behind you. "No!"

Pierce stops dead, turning around to face him. "I beg your pardon?"

You turn around and see Bucky standing behind you, looking shocked. You slightly shake your head, trying to stop him.

Bucky doesn't notice, or is pointedly ignoring your attempts to get his attention, and stares at Pierce, shaking his head. "You can't send her on a mission to Sokovia. She'll be killed!"

Pierce shakes his head. "She is my soldier, Barnes."

Bucky throws his hands in the air, exasperated. "God damnit, Pierce, she's a kid!" He yells.

Pierce steps forward towards Bucky, also looking frustrated. "And again, she is my soldier, so where she goes is my decision."

Bucky turns to you, eyes wide. "Y/n, you know this is dangerous. Don't do it."

You look at him, then at Pierce. Pierce gives you a tight smile. "Remember our discussion a few weeks ago, Y/n?"

You look at your hands, and Bucky looks between you two in confusion. "What discussion? Don't believe anything he says, Y/n, he's a liar!"

You raise your head, looking back and forth between them, tears in your eyes. Pierce's eyes narrow. "Tell me, Y/n, who supplies you with food every day? Who supplies for the clothes on your back, the bed in your room, and lets you stay here for free?"

You drop your head, blinking away tears. "You do." You mumble.

Bucky looks at you sadly. "Y/n, you don't need to listen to him. Don't get yourself killed, just because he gives you this-this dystopian home."

You shake your head quickly. "Bucky, you-you don't understand, this is my life now. I've done countless missions, knowing full well that each one could be my last."

Bucky sighs. "But why, Y/n? Give up this life of deception and lies, and live a normal life."

You give a short laugh, shaking your head. "What life? I have no home, no family. This is what I have to do to get even close to a somewhat normal life."

Before Bucky can speak again, you turn back to Pierce. "Sir, I will carry out the mission."

He smiles. "Good, good." He turns to leave. "You have 36 hours to have the vial on my desk." With that, he walks out.

You take a deep breath, and turn back to Bucky. "I'm sorry, Bucky, but-"

He cuts you off, pulling you into a hug. Silent tears begin to stream down your face. "I just-if I disobey Pierce, I've got nowhere else to go. And right now, I'm this close to him just, kicking me onto the street."

He closes his eyes as you pull away. "I know. I just, don't want you to get hurt, ok?"

You nod, wiping your eyes. "Believe me, I can't afford to fail this mission. I've been on his bad side for the past few days, so I've got to try."

He smiles softly as you grab your bag. "Be careful, Y/n. I want to see you back here, got it?"

You hug him again, tightly. "Got it. I'll be back soon, I promise!"

With that, you head out the door, casting one last glance behind you.
