Noah

I had an hour of free time after school before I had to go to work. Which was the equivalent to no time at all and I was clocking into work sooner than I'd like.

As soon as I was on the clock, my boss Mary came up to me, shoving a bin in my hand. "Very busy. And next time you wear your converse you'll be written up."

I looked down at my casual shoes. I had lost my dress shoes, but maybe I just needed to clean my room. "Understood," is all I said before walking out of the kitchen and onto the floor. We were packed, there was maybe three empty tables out of the thirty or so that we had.

I went around table to table asking, "Are you done with this?" If there was still food on the plate that sat on the edge of the table. Usual answer was no and I placed it in my bin. Other times, the dishes that were pushed towards the edge of the table were cleared and I could wordlessly put the dish in the plastic bin.

And at least twice a shift I got a certain type of customer...

"Are you done with this?" I asked a table of three girls. There was an appetizer plate with a few garlic bread knots on it at the end of the table. Their steaming hot pasta dinner in front of each girl.

The girls seemed to be my age and dressed like they came from money. Their daddy's money no doubt.

"Yes, thank you," a girl with long blonde hair, big blue eyes said. Her dark red dress gave an ungodly show of her chest.

I gathered the dishes, but before I could leave she said, "Ya' know, I come here a lot and I definitely would've remembered a face like yours," her tone was smooth and flirtatious. "You must be a new hire," then her eyes roamed down my body then back up.

"I started over a month ago," I said. The other two girls paused at eating their meal to listen in on your conversation that I was sure would lead to her writing her number down on the receipt.

"Ah, well, I just got back from Greece. I spent two months there, so that makes sense why I haven't seen you."

"I'm sure you'll see more of me."

"I'm planning on it," She smiled innocently sinful- an underlying meaning we both read.

"Enjoy your meal," I said and went to the next table. Once I was done wiping it down, I turned around and froze.

My chest tightened at the sight of my ex with his boyfriend.

Fuck me, of course this would happen. Why was this world continuously bringing Sam back into my life?

Sam and I locked eyes and I couldn't find the will power in me to look away until my boss came up to me. "Janice isn't here yet, can you host until she gets here?" Mary asked, her eyes pleading as if I could say no to my boss.

Oh fuck no, you have got to be shitting me.

But because I had to, I told her, "I'm on it." I'd rather walk into traffic.

"Perfect, now get those two to their table," and she took my bin and rag and went to the kitchen.

I leaned my head back with a groan.

Don't get mad, just direct Sam and Boring Ben to a table and don't speak to him again.

When I turned around, I saw Sam quickly turn away from me and take a step closer to his boyfriend. Walking up to them, Sam wouldn't even look at me. I got to the host podium. "Sorry for the wait. Just two?" I questioned as pleasantly as I could make myself.
