Where it all began⁹

"Go to your fucking room, brat," Levi kicked him square in the face, "Unless you want a repeat of the court beating."

Levi ran like his life depended on it

The commander's office.

Levi knocked on the door three times. A delay after the first two knocks.

This let Erwin know it was him.

No response.
He reached for the door handle.

Erwin was standing up, staring blankly at the door. As soon as it opened they made eye contact.

"Erwin." Levi closed the door behind him

"Levi, if this can wait until I get back, please excuse me." Erwin scraped shoulders with him as he walked to the door

"Oi! I'm not letting you go until you listen to me!" Levi blocked the door

If Erwin wanted to, he could have easily moved Levi. He knew Levi wouldn't kick him.

"Be quick. I'm sure Eren is waiting for you." Erwin snickered

"Don't mock me you bastard! Eren's the one who made a move on me."

"In any case-"

"I don't like men....much less children!" Levi's voice cracked

"That's no reason to break the poor boy's heart."

"You know damn well he stepped out of line! Don't make me the bad guy here."  Levi grabbed the collar of Erwin's shirt.
Erwin immediately grabbed his hand.

Levi could feel Erwin's hand tremble on his.

"I'm sorry Erwin." The words just slipped out of Levi's mouth

"Sorry? What, for making out-" Erwin didn't get a chance to finish his sentence before Levi let go of his collar and reached for the door

"Have a safe trip."

With those words Levi left

"Mike and I will be heading outside of the walls for a few days."

"How many?"

"Precisely 3"

Levi walked to the courtyard in complete silence. The selection of the new reformed Levi squad was in three days.

All of the trainees who had chosen The Survey Corps were present. All except Eren.

"As you brats may know, I'm gonna observe your training for a while. You better not slack off." Levi glared

"Yes, sir!" They rang out

"First, you will all go on the course. Im watching you closely."

"Is it just me or does heichou seem even more..." Jean inquired
"Gloomy?",Connie chimed in,"I thought so too"
Sasha was too busy chewing to comprehend the conversation.

The cadets all got on the training course. Styrofoam napes flying left and right.

Captain Levi observed them, reminiscing of his first days as a cadet.
He remembered how Erwin vouched for him in court.
The first time he ate cadet food. The taste of hot, homecooked meals was a distant, fond memory to  Levi. Ever since Kenny left it was a luxury.
The first birthday that Levi celebrated as a cadet. How Erwin gave him a silky white cravat, the one he carried around his neck.
