I woke up feeling like I just took a long nap, there's no pain, no suffering, no screaming, and no hurt, something I haven't felt in years. for the first time in my life, well I guess not life, I felt peaceful.
I was lying in what looked like a field of dandelions, sitting up I looked around noticing there was no one here but me "hello." I said hoping for one of my loved ones to respond.
"Hello Harriet." a deep almost hollow voice said, I looked in front of me to see a figure that was not there a moment ago, he was tall and wrapped in a black cloak "death?" I asked recognizing him from the book about the hollows.
"Yes Harriet, I'm sorry to see you under such circumstances." he said sounding mournful.
I stood up looking up at his towering figure "it's all right, it was my choice after all. can I join my mates now?" I asked hopefully.
"Miss Potter, as you must know, you are the Mistress of death, my mistress." he said.
"But... I snapped the wand, I threw the stone in the woods, the only hollow I possess is the cloak." I told him confused.
"By giving up two out of the three Hollows and making sure that those two will never be inquired by another, you made yourself the last and eternal Mistress of death." Death explained.
"Does that mean I can't be reunited with my loved ones at death?" I asked feeling tears threatening to fall.
"No, it means you have a choice." death said.
"Okkkk... no offense death but I do not want to go back to the land of the living, no thanks." I told him.
"Well then I guess that choices is off the table, but you still have two more." Death said looking amused, well sounding amused, he doesn't really look like anything.
"Ok, let's hear them." I said.
"You may remain in the Land of the Dead reunite with your loved ones and take your rightful place as the Mistress of death or you may go back to life at a point in your life where a few simple changes can change the outcome of the future for the world." Death said.
"Look death, I've had enough of cryptic riddles when I was alive. unless you tell me exactly when this point in my life is and at least a few of the changes I will need to make I'm not going anywhere." I said.
"Why do you think I care if you go anywhere? by all means stay right here." He said not very convincingly.
I just lift my I'm eyebrows at him crossing my hands looking at him with an unimpressed look.
"I will answer three questions about your return, nothing more." He said.
"Fine, why do you want me to choose this option?" I asked.
"To the contrary of what people believe, I do not enjoy death. I'm simply doing my duty, it is my purpose and honor to guide Souls to the Beyond. death keeps life at balance, gives life a purpose, there is no life without death. In your short life time I have had to guide the souls of people who did not deserve to die, the souls of people who did not reach their time, the souls of children. I wish to give them another chance, just as I wish to give you another chance to live a longer happier life and restore the balance." Death said.
I was shocked by his answer but I understood what he meant, something with no end has no meaning.
"when will you send me to?" I asked.
"The summer before your fourth year." He answered.
"What is the biggest change I will have to make?" I asked my final question.
"You," he said "you are the biggest change you will have to make. you will have to be stronger, you'll have to fight harder, smarter. every change you make will matter. you will be the biggest change." Death said.
"Will I still be the Mistress of death? will I still have all my memories?" I asked.
"Yes and yes and that's two extra answers consider it a generosity." He said.
"Thank you." I said.
"Yes well it's choosing time, what will it be?" He asked.
"I'll go back. I want another chance, for everybody." I said determined.
"I feel I must warn you mistress, being my mistress will protect you from any unwanted future compilations spells, and potions but those that are already in your body I cannot remove which means the core of your magic will once again be blocked until you'll visit Gringotts." He said, making me shatter remembering what it feels like to have your core blocked.
"Can you put me at Gringotts when I wake up in that time?" I asked shooting my shot.
"I'm afraid not. I can only put your future soul into your past body which means you will be at your relatives house when you wake up." He said, making me shatter once again.
"It will be on your birthday, it must be on your birthday. so I can rebirth your current Soul into your past body." He explained.
"Ok," I said nervously "I think I'm ready, what do I have to do?" I asked.
"Just lie down, I will take care of the rest." death said.
I once again lied down in the field of dandelions waiting for my opportunity to do it all again, to begin.
