"I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss your bride"
The church erupted in cheer. I stood there motionless, watching my husband kissing another woman. They looked so happy together. She also looks breathtakingly beautiful, better than I looked on my wedding day. Sister wife. That word left a bitter taste in my mouth. Never have I ever thought that I would share Mzwakhe with another woman. A beautiful woman, younger than me, vibrant, loved by the entire family because she's the chosen one.
"Basetsana", I'm brought back to reality when someone calls my name.
"uright sisi? " (are you okay) Ntombi asks
"I'm okay" I give her a faint smile
"Basie, you know that you don't have to pretend when you're with me" she says with concern laced in her voice
"Ntombi your brother, my husband, is getting married to another woman. Your family looks soo happy. I can't be okay obviously."i say
" I'm sor.. "I cut her short before she even goes further
" you don't have to be sorry sisi. It is what it is. Angithi your ancestors wanted her so what can I do? Let me go and congratulate Mr and Mrs Mkhize"
I leave her there looking at me with pity in her eyes. That is the one thing I don't need right now. Pity.
"Mr and Mrs Mkhize" I say revealing my white set of teeth. They both turn to look at me. My sister wife gives me a smile while my husband gives me a rather confused look
"Sister wife" says Nkuli, my sister wife
"I just wanted to congratulate you guys" I say to them
"Awww siyabonga maMkhize the first" says Nkuli
"And I also wanted to give you this present" I say giving her a gift bag
"Thank you" they both say
"Now it is time for the newly Wed couple to share their first dance" the MC announces
They both hurry to the stage and sure thing by Miguel starts blasting out from the huge speakers.
But I thought that that was our song. Our special song.
I couldn't watch them anymore. I couldn't bare seeing him holding her so close to him. His hand moving in a circular movement on her small back. I quickly rushed out, got in my car and drove home to wallow in sorrow.
I'm am Basetsana Mkhize. Mooketsi is my maiden surname. I'm 27 years old and work as an accountant.
This is my story.
