Aether and Noelle were lying in the grass, talking, with a rose between them, when Noelle unexpectedly said, "And he's not my boyfriend."

"No, but he is your bodyguard.

I kind of figured that out in the van."

She lifted up on her elbows.

"You're kidding, right?"

"I wish.

He said he had an official standing when it came to the girl."

Aether giggled.

"I don't know if I'd go that far."

She rubbed at her arm, as if to clear away a phantom itch.

"He's really nice, though, huh?

Does he seem... intimidating?"

"Like I said, I think he's a guard dog.

That's why I made the sign."

She laughed.

Then, a certain red-headed bartender walked up the hill towards the two.

"Calling Thoma a dog again, are we?" Diluc asked.

Noelle and Aether started to laugh.

"He's just being friendly," Diluc said.

"He's not attacking."

"I thought you were a wise person, Diluc," Noelle said.

"I'm not in love with Thoma," he said, "and I don't care to make him jealous by sharing an intimate moment with you."

"Fine, if that's what you want." He shifted his weight from foot to foot.

"So, are you guys..." He looked at Aether.

"No," she said.

"We're friends."

Diluc didn't press it.

Aether glanced over his shoulder and into the eyes of a certain lurking adeptus.

"I know you're there Xiao. Come out and hang with us." Aether called.

Xiao was peeking around the corner and smiling mischievously.

He turned around.

"All right, we're with you.

He can go and hang with that pompous asshole."

"Aww.

That's so sweet," Diluc said.

"Please don't tell me he's taking your side."

"Don't be silly.

I know you're just kidding."

"You're lucky.

I never joke about that."

He laughed again.

"Then I'll play my cards right.

Totally."

Diluc couldn't help but grin.

"All right."
