L sat at the computer, late at night as usual. You'd gone off to bed, and nagged him about coming too. He promised he would once he'd finished reading through the chat logs.

Once you'd voiced your concerns about potentially missing something, he decided to double check everything. And he'd spent the past few days reading through every chat log, website data and file again. Just to be sure. He couldn't find anything that hadn't already been covered, and figured you were just being a but paranoid. He couldn't blame you, this case had thrown so many twists and turns at you it'd make sense to think there'd be another one. But as he finally approached the last few pages, he was sure there was nothing to worry about and Rosie's kidnapping was merely a horrible crime of opportunity.

Eyes getting a little strained form the computer screens, L sat back and closed his eyes tightly to fix his vision again. Maybe he should get glasses, he looked at screens too often, it probably wasn't healthy. Stretching out his arms and twisting his back like a cat getting ready to flop down on your pillow, he sighed. He was ready for this case to be over so he could move onto one that was just as challenging but less scary and depressing. He likes a challenge, but not the trauma of seeing horrible things. Like that damn snuff video, it still haunted him whenever it came back to him.

It sent shivers down his spine.

Scrolling through the pages, he looked for anything significant but couldn't spot anything he hadn't already dealt with.

"Hm... can't blame (y/n) for being worried but I think we're fine..." he muttered to himself.

He finally reached the bottom, and concluded there was nothing he'd missed. Although because he was thorough, he decided to do one last thing. Run the data through a code breaker to see if there was anything hidden in the files themselves, it'd take a while to load. So, he got up to stretch his limbs out and walk around the orphanage.

It was a peaceful place at night, although it's gothic architecture and rustic style did unsettle some of the younger kids when they got up to walk the halls at night for a drink. L found it rather pretty though.

Walking past the kids rooms, it was dead silent as it was way past lights out and everyone was asleep. Being the protective mentor he was, he peaked into their rooms to make sure they were all ok.

Near slept soundly with his biggest teddy bear snuggled in with him. Mello slept with an arm hanging off the bed and the blankets tangled around his legs. Matt was out like a light, his game boy having run out of battery and sitting on his pillow.

And Rosie, she was tucked in sound asleep with her notebook on the bedside table and a pen sitting atop it. On her pillow was one of her toys and the blankets were pulled up over her shoulders to keep her snug and warm. You must have tucked her in tonight, you always pulled the blankets up over your shoulders.

Maybe he was just getting soft the more kids he was told to take care of, but he couldn't help but feel relieved they were all sound asleep and ok.

Of course he passed by his own room too where you were already asleep in his bed, wrapped up in the blankets with a single hand sticking out for temperature regulation. He'd come and slip into your arms as soon as he was done, he'd grown to like sleeping as long as you were there with him. Although no amount of sleep would ever get rid of his eyebags.

At the end of the hall he's continued down, a single light was on. It was Wataris office, and of course, L checked in there as well.

"Hey dad" he said.

"Ah you're still awake, why am I not surprised?" Watari replied.

"I'll go to bed I'm a minute, I'm just finishing up. And you? It's past lights out"

"L I own the building, I can break my own rules. Plus, orphanages don't run themselves I have paperwork to fill out"

Wataris office was always so warm and nostalgic. He used to fall asleep in the armchair in the corner as a kid, when he'd refuse to go to bed but was still tired. You know kids, they claim they're not sleepy then fall asleep 2 minutes later.

"And look at you, actually willingly sleeping. (Y/n)s got you wrapped around their finger" Watari teased.

"Yeah... I just like the reassurance of someone else being there I guess" L replied.

Watari gave him a knowing smile, and felt content with where L was in his life right now. After raising him for so long, he was glad to see L finally happy with someone.

"You love them" he said.

"I know... I'm a suck up" L replied.

"You got soft"

"I know, it's (y/n) sorcery to blame. Although if it's them, I don't think I mind it"

"You know L, I was always worried you'd end up lonely when I'm gone. You never were good at making friends, and while it's fine to be introverted and a bit of a loner... everyone needs someone. At least one person they can rely on. I'm glad you finally found them, one day when I'm gone, I trust (y/n) will take care of you" Watari said.

That felt bittersweet to L. Bitter because he'd have to say goodbye to Watari one day, sweet because even so he always knew that his dad would be proud of him.

"Don't say it like that, I don't wanna think about you leaving me" L said.

"One day L, maybe not soon but one day. You'll do just fine, I know you will" Watari replied.

"I'll miss you, so much"

"And I'll be watching you from whatever afterlife there is"

Even if he wasn't lucky enough to have birth parents that loved him, he'd always have Watari. Who would always, and forever, be his dad.

"I love you kiddo" Watari said.

"I love you too dad, I'm finishing this work and going to bed. You get some sleep too ok?" L replied.

"I will, goodnight"

"Night"

L left happy, he always liked talking to his dad before bed. Gave him something nice to think about as he fell asleep. Heading back to the computer he found the program was done loading and he opened the file to see if the code breaker has detected anything.

There were a lot of pages of nothing, just negative answers or inconclusive gibberish. But there was one page that came up with something, an embedded code from one of the chat logs.

11 ankors road, willowville.

L raised an eyebrow, an address? What significance did some random address have? He pulled up google maps and looked it up, finding it was the address for a closed down pizza shop. Must be a drop off point for drug trades or something, he'd keep it in mind and go check it out later just to be sure.

Other than that, there was no missed information. L could safely say that aside from a potential drop off point, you hadn't missed anything and once the trails were over the case would be officially closed.

He'd tell you his findings in the morning, for now he'd turn everything off and crawl in next to you. He always slept better in your arms.
