I scream and I hear Jake stifle a cry. The queen has tears pouring down her cheeks.
"Carlie! Don't do it!" Kristen yells.
"M-mom!' Jake cries out. I start to cry, scared and unsure what to do.
"Hand over the girl." The rebel repeats, pointing his gun to the queen's temple. The queen squeezes her eyes shut, as if she's preparing to die. Suddenly a voice rings out in the library.
"Stop. I'll come with you." Wait, that's MY voice.
"Carlie, no!" Jake and Kristen cry out at the same time.
"I have to, there's no one I'll lose if I'll die. If she dies, you lost your mother, your country lost their queen. I have to go, Jake." I say softly, tears brimming in my eyes.
"B-but Carlie, what about u-us?" Jake stammers while a tear slips down his cheek.
"You'll find someone else. There are still plenty of girls here." I laugh shakily and take a step backward. The queen cries out again,
"Don't do it Carlie!" I shake my head and repeat,
"I have to." Jake sinks to the floor, his head in his hands. Heartbroken sobs echo through the room.
"I'll come with you." I say to the guard, as bravely as I can muster.
"Ah. Good girl." The rebel laughs.
"Carlie." Jake whispers and looks up at me. His blue eyes are full of tears. I have to literally tear my eyes away. I bite my lip and look back at the rebel.
"Let go of the queen." I say firmly, although fear shakes through me.
"Give me your hand first." He replies. I hold out my arm. The rebel grabs my wrist harshly and yanks me toward his side. He pushes the queen in Jake's direction.
"Well, my job here is done." The rebel turns around and pulls me along.
"We'll get you back. I'll come for you. I promise." Jake's voice calls out. That's the last thing I hear before everything goes black.
*******************************
I wake up, some time later in a car, I think. It's very dark and dirty. Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm in the back of a van. The car.. er van travels along a bumpy road. Something stirs in the corner and I scream,
"Hush it woman. We're not going to kill you." It's the rebel that took me. It might just be a figment of my imagination but I fear he said 'yet'.
"W-where am I-I going?" I ask shakily.
''Rebel headquarters. We're almost there." The rebel says. I pause,
"What's your name?" I ask hesitantly,
"What? Oh. Jeffery." He replies, sounding surprised.
"Oh. Thank you." I say quietly. Finally, after what seemed like hours of silence, the van stops moving. Jeffery grabs my arms, ties my hands together with rope and pushes me harshly onto the ground. I stumble and drop onto all fours. Jeffrey snorts,
"Get up! You're not a dog!" He barks with laughter.
"Sounds like you're more of a dog than I am." I mutter. He glares at me,
"What did you say?" I shake my head, biting back a smile despite the situation,
"Nothing."
"Whatever. Let's go." He tugs me toward the entrance which is well hidden with moss and trees. I walk in nervously and look around. There seem to be more than two hundred rebels! The room becomes deathly silent and suddenly, a woman's voice is heard.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, Lady Carlie Wanger, from the selection. Also, my dear daughter." Did I just hear her say 'my daughter'? The room starts to spin and just before I black out, for the second time today, I catch a glimpse of my so called Mom. She has short brown hair, it's cut into a bob and the same brown eyes as me. Maybe she really is my mom.
****************************
I wake up again, some more time later to a sharp pain at the back of my head. I sit up slowly, rubbing the sore spot and looking around. My 'Mom' is standing next to me.
"How're you feeling?" She asks, sounding concerned.
"Uh kidnapped and violated. Who are you and what's going on?" I ask, confused, embarrassed and somewhat angry.
"Well, I guess I should tell you the full truth. I'd rather you stay quiet through the story though, can you do that?" She raises an eyebrow at me. I hesitate before nodding.
"Okay good. My name is Evangeline Susanna Wanger, born Girnon. I am your birth mother. Now, do you remember when I died?" She makes little quote signals with her fingers. I start rambling,
"Of course I do, well if you are really my Mom-" I cut myself off when she gives me a stop-rambling-I'm-trying-to-explain-what's-going-on look. I motion for her to continue.
"Thank you. Now as I was saying, the day I died-" She makes the little signals again,
"-well, I didn't actually die. I blacked out and had trouble breathing while your idiotic father thought I stopped breathing altogether. So, as you can see, he thought I was dead. He didn't even bother burying me. He threw me in an aisle, where I woke up, some time later, confused. I was walking around, trying to find our home when a nice young lady welcomed me into her home. Her husband came home, he was the rebel leader at the time. He offered me a spot on the rebel team, which was way too small at the time. I was quite young and wanted just to get away from your father, I was also stupid and left you with him. Anyways, the rebel leader was very kind, he helped me back to health and I started to fight with the others. I am not sure why I have continues to kill people, but Carlie, you must understand, we only kill those who are truly evil, wicked, those who want anyone dead, just for the fun of it. Later on, the leader died on a raid, and left all rebels to me! Me! Of all people. And so, the first rebel attack at the palace was to get you, but we failed, and only retrieved this." She pulls out my locket and I gasp She hands it to me.
"The second attack was successful, now that you're here. The only reason that we brought you here was to ask this one question, Carlie. Would you like to join the rebels? And bring down the throne?"
