chapter thirty two: anyhropophagi papilio

The following morning you wake up to more yelling. You quickly throw the covers off of your body and run out of the bus to see Bokuto and Kuroo walking off from each other in different directions. Seeing as Kuroo's moving at a much quicker pace- and walking into the forest alone- you decide to run after him.

"Kuroo!" you shout as you enter the forest on the brisk morning.

But Kuroo doesn't answer despite how you may shout. You're only able to catch up to him once he slows his fast walking down and you run up in front of him.

"Leave me alone, Y/N," he pouts as he brushes his arm against yours to get around you. "I'm fucking out of here."

"What?! You're leaving?!" you say in disbelief as he continues to walk away. "But you said-"

"Fuck what I said!" he shouts as he shoots up his hand to dismiss your comment. "I'm not sticking around here with a bunch of fucking criminals!"

"What the hell?" you scoff as you reach out and grab him by the arm. You spin him around to face you, giving him a look that'd kill if it could. "You told me you went to jail, too, remember? So don't go acting all high and mighty like you're above the rest of us!"

"You've got to understand, I didn't do what I went to fucking prison before. I thought you believed me when I told you that shit, but one of them is a fucking murderer! Think seriously. Do you really want to stick around in a situation like that either?" he continues to yell.

"Then we need to stick together and find out who it is! Do you actually think Bokuto is capable of-"

"Here you go again," he interrupts with a scoff as he pulls himself away from your grasp. "Weren't you sad and mourning Tsukishima who died like three days ago? Seems like you moved on pretty quickly to me. How do I know it wasn't you, hm?"

"Seriously?" you shout in a huff at his audacity. "Who are you to judge my character when you're being the fucking coward who's leaving!"

Kuroo scoffs and shakes his head. He stuffs his hand in his pockets and walks off without another word. You continue to call after him, but no longer do you move in his direction.

"Fuck you, Kuroo! You promised you'd stay here and fucking protect me but instead, you're leaving like a coward!" you curse as you watch him just as he's about to disappear amongst the trees. But he then stops, doesn't turn around to face you, but he pauses to think about his decision now.

"I cared about you," he says in a voice so soft you almost don't hear him beneath the wind. "But I don't think you care enough about yourself to do something about this situation. I'm sorry, but I can't stick around any longer."

"You think I don't care enough?" you scoff. "All I do is care about every single person. You're the one who always has an issue. You're the one running away. You rather leave than stay and help. Kuroo, don't do this. Stay."

"I'm sorry," he repeats still without looking back at you. "I can't stay."

With that, Kuroo disappears into the woods. You watch in silence for a moment, waiting and hoping that he'll change his mind and come back. But when you hear the crackling of leaves behind you, a gasp escapes your lips and you whip your body behind.

A few steps away, Kenma sinks down against a tree. You watch as he hugs his knees up to his chest and stares down at his kneecaps.

"So you heard that, too, huh?" you sigh. Poor Kenma. Why did he of all people have to follow you?

You walk up to him and crouch down beside him with your back against the tree as well.

"I can't believe he left without saying anything to me," he whispers. "I don't understand why he left. Does he really think it could have been me?"

"I don't think so," you shake your head. "Kuroo's confused. But I have a feeling that he'll come back to us after he's cooled off a bit."

"He said he was leaving," Kenma reminds you bluntly. "He's not coming back, Y/N."

You sigh as you place your head on his shoulder. "Then we'll just have to open he changes his mind."

"Do you think this means it wasn't him?" he then asks.

"He wouldn't have anything to lose by telling me just before he walked off. So, no. I'm pretty sure it wasn't him," you respond.

"So we're no closer to solving this... And Kuroo's gone."

"Kenma, he's gone but we've still got each other. I don't plan on leaving any time soon and I don't think anyone else is. We're going to figure this mess out one way or another."

"So then you promise you're not going to leave?" he asks as he picks up his head, causing you to do the same.

"Not unless someone drags me away," you smile.

"Me neither," he smiles. "Thanks, Y/N."

The two of you then sit together in silence, still half hoping that Kuroo will appear again. But after an hour of complete silence, you both decide to go back to the bud for something to eat.

As you get back to the entrance of the woods, you look back once more. It tears you apart inside to say goodbye to Kuroo. The two of you had gotten so close over the past few weeks. You hope he comes back safely, and soon. But for now, you've really got to figure out this murder situation. And fast.
