chapter sixty: maledictus papilio

When you get back to the bus with Suna, another man waits outside the bus doors. He seems to be trying to figure out how to pry them open. How nobody inside didn't hear him, you aren't quite sure, but you're here to put an end to it.

"Hey, who the fuck are you?" you shout at him as you watch him try to get into your bus.

The man turns around and quietly looks at you. It's hard to tell what he's thinking with a black mask over most of his face, but you can tell he looks desperate to get inside.

The man hobbles on one leg as he turns around to face you. "I'm sorry," he says to you. "I was just looking for help.

When he tells you this, you begin to scan his body for any wounds. But when none is to be seen, the man lifts up his pant leg and shows you a huge, bleeding gash.

"Shit," Suna shakes his head, knowing you'll easily let him onto the bus without a second thought.

And, of course, he's right. Two minutes later, you've got the doors wide open and you're helping him onto the couch beside Oikawa.

"Goddammit, Y/N," Osamu groans when he sees the black-haired man beside you being gently lowered onto the couch. "I hate to tell you I told you so but-"

"Oh go suck on it, Samu," you sigh as Suna tosses you the medicine for Oikawa. "If you don't like it then leave. You know I'm not just going to leave him out there like that."

"Ya know, I think you've got some kind of problem. I mean, helping people is cool and all but sometimes I swear it's like you're overcompensating for something," he scoffs as he walks away toward the front of the bus. You look over at Suna for a moment, hoping he's kept that secret just between the two of you, before beginning your work on your newest patient.

Oikawa and Suna watch quietly as you cleanse the man's wounds and help him as best you can. Then, once all is said and done, you pass him the same pair of crutches you once lent to Bokuto.

"Thank you," the man says politely as he attempts to stand up.

"No! Not yet!" you insist as you place your hands on his shoulders and lean him back against the upholstery. "Relax. You really shouldn't be on it at all. Stay for a bit. We'll back off and give you some space, right?" you say as you look around the bus. Osamu's the first to respond as he lifts up his hand and flashes you the middle finger. "Thanks, Samu," you sigh. "Anyone else?"

"Yeah, I was going to step out anyway for some air," Oikawa shrugs as he gets to his feet. "I'll be outside. Call me if you need me."

"If we ignore him who's he supposed to talk to?" Hinata asks as Suna exits the bus. "I mean, we don't even know his name. He doesn't know ours."

"You catch him up to speed, Hinata," you smile as you pat him on the back. "I'm going to check up on Oikawa."

When you leave, you vaguely hear the little group going over their names, but you mostly tune it out. Instead, you walk down the steps of the bus and look around for Oikawa. Luckily, he isn't too far off.

"Hey, how's it goin'?" you ask him as you approach where he sits just outside the Seiyu entrance.

"I think I'm next on the one-way bus to hell," he morbidly explains.

"Don't be like that," you respond as you sink down beside him, your back resting against the wall behind you. "You're not going to die. It wasn't that much blood. It could be nothing."

"It's not nothing," he shakes his head as he holds out his arm and shows you his sleeve where he had been sneezing. It's that moment, where you see half his arm soaked in blood, and you realize you hadn't gotten that shirt you wanted to stop in for initially. "It's a lot of fucking blood."

"Shit," you mutter to yourself.

"Yeah. Shit's right," he scoffs. "You know, I've been thinking about it, and I'm pretty sure we're cursed. All of us who were in jail before the outage. I mean, Bokuto, Akaashi, and Atsumu are dead. Kuroo was in jail, too. Back then we were all ready to slit any throats we needed to get by, but only the real crazy ones actually went out and did it. Despite that, I'm pretty sure Hinata and I are still fucking cursed, too. At least it's me and not him first, though. I wouldn't wish this shit on anybody... Well, except maybe a few but they're already gone."

"You're not fucking cursed, Oikawa," you chuckle as you nudge him in the side. "Not in that way, at least, but maybe cursed to have Kageyama follow you around for the rest of your life."

"Maybe I really am okay with coughing up blood now that you mention it," he teases back. "Think it'll keep Tobio away for long enough so I can make a run for it?"

"I dunno about that but I think he has been pretty preoccupied with Hinata recently," you smile.

"I think you might be on to something there," he nods. "The two of them are always bickering like an old married couple."

Just as the two of you begin to converse, you hear a piercing scream from inside the bus. You then see the bus doors swing wide open and a dark figure run straight out. Instantly, you and Oikawa stand up and see the curly-haired man making a run for it.

"What the hell?" Oikawa sighs as he watches the man hobble away as fast as he can.

"I've got it," you assure him as you bend your knees and bolt off toward the escapee. He's got a bad leg. It's pretty easy to catch him. But when you see a bloody pair of scissors in his hand- the same pair you used to cut the gauze for his leg- you nearly let him walk right past you.

"Woah, woah, woah, hold it," you say as you grab him by the shoulder and keep him in place. "You aren't going anywhere, my friend. Now just give me those and talk. Fast."
