So that was the beginning of us. People always want to know how a relationship like ours could get started in the first place and that's how. Despite popular opinion we went on for some time...sixteen years more to be exact. Anthony and Lady Eve got married; Gina and Grant didn't, though they stayed together. Eventually Clem's breathing difficulties got the better of her and we had to do the humane thing and Little Cate followed along a few years later. I continued writing—some books did well, some didn't—and Alex painted and sculpted and played in her gardens. Then one afternoon twenty-six years after we met Alex got a headache while we were in the garden. She'd lost her vision a few times and the MRI had shown a tiny clot, which we'd named Harriet because it was easier to curse something that had a name. Alex sat on the blanket I was lying on and held her head.
'Do you want me to call an ambulance?'
'No.'
I put my book down and held her until she was just a weight in my arms. The sky was clear except for a few clouds peeking over the trees.
