The look on Tengen-sama's face is enough to break your heart again. Just as Shin's look did moments before. It's not just shock but also puzzlement. Because you shouldn't have done this again.
He doesn't wear his kimono as you expected it to be. A uniform replaces it. Tengen-sama must have had one at Oyakata-sama's place. He overall doesn't look like the last time you've seen him. His hair is slicked back into the bun and his jewelries are reflecting the tiny amount of sunlight that managed to get through the leaves. He even changed his shoes. It's the same with Tokito-san.
None of the hashira drew their weapons.

"Morning y/n, what are you doing here?", Tengen-sama asks warningly.

He looks between you and Shin and you wonder when he'll notice the similarities.
As if he heard you his eyes widen as he seems to connect everything you've told him.

"Asking you to go back home", you answer.

If Tokito-san is irritated he hides it.
"It's our mission to kill that demon. Why are you protecting him?", he wants to know.
His voice is smooth like silk.

Your eyes jump from his eyes to Tengen-sama's. Your teacher seems to silently beg you to stop. You still have the chance to. Right now you and Shin are the only ones who are willing to attack.
Tokito-san's view drifts to the withered plants and makes his guess.

"Please leave", you repeat.

You really don't wanna do this.
Shin seems to notice it too.

"Normally I would happily give this mission to anyone who wants it but you don't look like you would kill the demon", Tengen-sama comments.
Any sentiments left his dark eyes. He's in full hashira mode. Coldly staring you down.
It gives you flashbacks to how it all began with him and you. Realizing how easy it is for him to forget about it pierces a hole into your soul. You wouldn't have thought that you had hopes that high.

"You're right", you respond wryly.

Shin's pinkie pokes into your back. His way to tell you that he's scared. Most demons have sharper senses than humans. Maybe he knows what is about to happen. Maybe he can smell the mood of the hashiras behind their facial disguise of boredom.

"Y/n, please step away", Tengen-sama pleads in his demanding tone.
Normally you would listen to him now.
His muscles are tense and in this moment you don't find it attractive but concerning.
You hold back the tears forming in your eyes.

How bad is it to have him as an opponent?

You don't move. Your nichirin blades stay on the sides of your body, their tips pointing to the sky. The tiny raindrops get bigger per second. You quickly check out the clouds to calculate how long it'll rain. How long the clouds will block the sunlight.
It doesn't look promising. On the other hand less rain means it won't get slippery on the ground.

A sizzling sound makes the hashiras step back. The raindrops that surge over Shin's skin trigger the venom hiding beneath it. For Shin rainy days always mean to cover every piece of skin. Otherwise he won't be able to keep it under which all of you witness now. The blueish venom emerges in drops and mixes with the rain. As soon as it drops to the ground it sizzles on the dieing plants and with the rising amount of rain it only gets worse. For your own safety you take a step forward. You're not the one being completely immune to any kind of venom. Although you are to most of them, thanks to Shin.

The hashiras keep eyeing the reaction of Shin's venom. To see how lethal it is gets them more motivated to kill him, though. Tengen-sama slowly draws his blades. They are still wrapped up but you know that it won't take more than a second to free them. Tokito-san puts a hand on his katana. His eyes reveal nothing about what he thinks.

"Y/n!", Tengen-sama repeats, "this is the last time I am asking you to go the fuck away and stop with this bullshit!"

His eyes are filled with ire but in the few breaths it takes for you to answer you can see a flash of hurt and worry in them.

"Over my dead body."

Shin snarls. Tengen-sama let's out a long sigh. He doesn't seem fully convinced that you would actually attack him.
They don't need words to communicate. Within seconds Tokito-san appears behind Shin, his katana being only centimeters away from his neck. You twirl around and block his attack. The noise of the blades pushed against each other silences the whole forest. Your heart beats faster. Shin would have been dead. You know that Tokito-san held back to watch how you would react. Now he knows which side you're on. You just hindered a hashira's attack.

His face shows no expression. He jumps back and stays opposite Tengen-sama. They are circling you, you realize. Looks like they think that the bigger threat is you and if you're out of the way they can easily kill Shin. Too bad he's not that weak anymore. Especially not if you're on the same battlefield.
The smell of rain and wet wood merges with the venom's smell. Your hair sticks to your face.
Your heart pounds wildly in your chest.

It's been so close, too close.

"Shin", you whisper, "do you remember our combo fighting style?"

He's been a human and you've not known the existence of demon slayers at all when you first established it.
However since things changed it's actually become a lethal combo attack.

A wicked smile appears on Shin's face only a demon is capable of.
"Sure, let's show them what it means to mess with twins."
