Fortunately Obanai-san doesn't show himself once again. Until dawn you lean onto a trunk and let your body rest. It doesn't get enough of it anyways.
The smell of the spring flowers enveloping Oyakata-sama's house flows to you as they open their blossoms with the first sun rays. A few minutes later the curtains of the windows reveal the faces of Oyakata-sama's offsprings.
You know they can't see you at your hiding spot but you can't stop the shiver that runs down your spine as you see their eyes. Like their father's they seem to notice every little thing; seem to have seen everything. These aren't the eyes of kids but of something ancient. Something you didn't want to battle. Ever. You wait another few minutes to collect yourself. With a heavy heart you leave the comfortable, moist trunk and the wood behind you.
In your dark clothing you stand out in the green area covered with dozens of flowers. The difference is so thorough it makes you feel like an outsider once more. The dark blot in the colorful demon slayer corps. An eyesore for everyone who wanted to inhale the beautiful view of the late spring. As to emphasize it your tongue dances along your pointed teeth. Different. The closer you get to the front yard the slower you walk. Where a few months ago tables, chairs and booths filled the blank area are now vegetable patches. A narrow path of gravel runs through it and links to the veranda. No possibilities to sneak to it, it seems.
You swallow.
Keep cool, he's not going to bite your head off. He said he needed you so this should be a good meeting. After checking the area with your eyesight for Obanai-san and not finding him you step onto the gravel. The sound of it shrieks in your ears. Fortunately the path isn't that long and as you finally stand in front of the veranda you're sure that not only the whole house but also every demon slayer on this island has heard you.
Nevertheless no one opens the door to expect you. No one seems to worry about you as the minutes pass and you still didn't set foot onto the veranda.
You don't want to face him.
You don't want to see the expression on his face or witness his nuisance. Obanai-san's comment didn't help you. You know how Oyakata-sama sees you and it's making it worse. In the distance you can hear the croaking of a raven. One would think it was just that but you know it was encouragement.
If Tori was a human you would marry her immediately.Gathering all your strength - physically and mentally - you finally step onto the veranda and knock ok the wooden door. The sound of it echoes through the whole place and you instantaneously want to turn around and never come back again. Unfortunately the door opens just two seconds later which makes you consider that they waited behind the door but wanted to make you suffer.
A young boy with light, pale skin and large, purple eyes shoves his head out. His blunt, black bob bobs as he does so. The endlessness of his eyes sucks in every detail of you like a black hole.
Did it get colder?
He steps aside and opens the door wider without a comment. Your gaze travels over his feminine appearance and the purple kimono that reminds you of someone else.
Kiriya Ubuyashiki always scared the shit out of you.
Oyakata-sama's son turns his back towards you and walks away while leaving the door wide open. An invitation.
You follow the child that moves graceful like a wraith through the house. Nothing inside it changed. The plants grew and the floor was mobbed but apart from that it looks like it's been looking for years now. A normal household.Kiriya Ubuyashiki disappears through another door. The one that leads to Oyakata-sama's backyard.
Suddenly Hachiko crosses your mind after months of not thinking about her at all. You remember her admiration for Oyakata-sama, the hashiras and especially for Tengen-san. Even though she never met Oyakata-sama apart from her accomodation to the demon slayer corps she never questioned him or her loyalty. She was the perfect example for a demon slayer.
Oyakata-sama himself barely knew her or at least didn't know her in person. Nevertheless he said a lot of personal things about her on her funeral and seemed to really be depressed about her passing away. You noticed that he never gave her emblem to anyone else but kept it in a desk like every other emblem of a passed away member.
Somehow the thought of her encourages you. If Oyakata-sama cared for a woman he barely knew he will not harm his daughter.
You swiftly touch your katanas - thanks to Hachiko they are a team.
