CHAPTER IV: THE PRELUDE

The following day was dies Saturni, meaning I was free to sit in my room and think about what had happened. Chan came around to check on me, but after five minutes of uncomfortable conversation, relented. We played Hexes Hold 'Em for over two hours, not saying a single word to each other.

"We should probably eat something," said Chan.

"I don't want to," I said.

"You should. You'll feel better."

"Do we have to go to the mess hall?"

Chan nodded. "It's designed that way. You're free to take food back to your dorm, but you have to go to the mess to get it."

It was ten in the morning, but you couldn't tell from the weather. It was raining and thundering so hard that bolts of lightning were striking innocent passerby. This was a phenomenon called "Storm is pissed," and it generally happened when the god Storm was pissed.

I had hoped most people were asleep. That couldn't have been further from the truth. Most freaks had gone out partying after yesterday's pankration trials, and those half-drunk half-hungover inhumans were ransacking the mess.

Chan did his best to hide me, but as soon as I walked through the door, people noticed. We were given a wide berth. A few people even stepped out of line as we approached.

I doubted I could eat anything solid, so I settled for a single warmed blood bag. Chan did his best to convince me to get a smoothie, but I wasn't having it.

"Okay, fine," Chan relented. "You want to go back?"

I sighed. "Let's just eat here," I said. "At least everyone will leave us alone."

Normally, you'd need to wait around for an empty table, but one cleared for us immediately. I didn't bother to fret over whether or not it was a coincidence.
