DAMON HASN'T ALWAYS BEEN THE EVIL VAMPIRE HE MAKES HIMSELF OUT TO BE, ONCE UPON A LIFETIME AGO...HE WAS JUST A SIMPLE HUMAN - A MAN IN LOVEMystic Falls, 1864
Men marched down the rugged road trail in the deep woods. Lit torches and shut guns in hand, a compass like device ticking relentlessly. Angry cries as well as the demanding footsteps of both horse and men filled the night.
"Be careful!" The original Johnathan Gilbert shouted over his shoulder, anxiously checking where the spinning arrow flickered.
"Here." Two men dragged a vervained vampire to the rest of the amateur hunters.
Johnathan pulled a metal dog muzzle over the creature's face.
"Get him in." He instructed as he helped shove him through the open back doors of a travel carriage, where he landed in a heap of his fellow immortal companions. All twenty-seven of them were muzzled and restrained.
Hidden behind the dead branches of a fallen tree, a human Damon watched with his brother as the townsmen's made another successful capture.
"We have to get to the church, they're waiting." The Gilbert ancestor announced to the men, preparing to move the vampires to their final resting place.
"Circle around that way, I'll distract them. Go." Stefan said, patting him on the back as a signal to move quickly.
Following along with the strategy, he left his brother's side.
"Over here! There's another one, quick! Help me!"
He watched the younger Salvatore lead the group of men away, leaving one standing in front of the carriage, guarding it protectively.
Damon snuck around behind him with a heavy rock in his hands and hit him over the back of his head with it, knocking him unconscious.
He quickly dug into the nameless man's pockets and retrieved the keys that could free the love of his life. Finally finding the right one on the rusted chain, he pushed it into the large keyhole as his brother returned.
"We don't have long." Stefan informed him.
Hearing an unlocking click, he swung the wooden door open and searched for the brunette.
"Kathrine...Kathrine." He called out softly as he watched her figure struggle to get out from the pile of bodies surrounding her.
Both brothers helped carry her out of the carriage and placed her gently on the gravelled ground.
They worked to take off her muzzle and quickly removed the restraining ties around her wrists.
"We're gonna get you out of here." He promised.
"Damon, hurry," Stefan warned at the sound of neighing bourses and grumbling men nearing, "Hurry!"
With the rope finally removed, he sits up straight from his hovering position, before he knew it the sound of a shot rung in his ear and an unforgiving bullet pierced his chest.
"No, no!" He heard his brother cry as he landed flat on his back. Eyes wide open and trained on the night sky, he felt the brief pain of his fatal wound. The life slowly escaped his body and the only thing he could hear over his faint breaths was the hopeless sound of his brother calling out to him, "Damon."
