Q: I tried this [using writing prompts] and I end up writing another story and abandoning my recent-supposedly-finished-novel instead and the process goes over and over again.
A: That's certainly not the desired outcome. Still, I'd encourage you at some point to pick up the story that you had abandoned; try to continue to develop it, even in smaller doses. Any progress is a step forward, and try to remember your reason for starting your story to begin. You had to have felt you had a story to tell, so tell it.
