Headcannon category; IF THEIR CHILD DIED TO PROTECT YOU

Imagine: Think about a scenario where it was either you or them to make it out alive. They'd quickly save you leaving you to watch them die in your arms. You'd be the last person they ever saw.

Listen to song!

-he wouldn't hate you but he wouldn't be able to deny how he feels which is sad and uncomfortable

- he would greet you at the passing ceremony but it would be quick and brief

- wouldn't treat you less than but it wouldn't be often that he'd stick around if you were there

-would constantly question why he couldn't protect them, why he wasn't there

-your face would remind him of what it took for you to be here and would constantly scold himself for questioning if you were even worth it

-it wouldn't be until a conversation between the two of you that you initiated that he'd soften with you. He would be underwater looking back on his child's moments with eywa when he'd open his eyes to leave and see you. Crying and sobbing as you held onto the glowing plant. Whispering out I miss you and I'm sorry. He wasn't a fool, he knew exactly who you cried out for. When you finally unlatched and rubbed your eyes you'd see Jake, the guilt immediately getting more intense. You'd apologize for being there but he would stop you and he'd go on to apologize, about the way he's been acting. After going to the surface to sit at the shore you'd both talk calmly, Jake would let a few tears slip. After you opened up about how it's been affecting you he'd put his hand on your shoulder with a tight grip. Telling you,

"I see you, I see what they saw."

- after this you two would be comfortable around each other, and he'd find solace in knowing that you were the one his child saved.

TONOWORI

- his sorrow for his child would be immensely great, his gentleness with his people would not falter and he would probably get more involved with his people and their needs to fill his heart

- his sorrow for his child would be immensely great, his gentleness with his people would not falter and he would probably get more involved with his people and their needs to fill his heart

- wouldn't hate you at all. Infact, he would understand you. Without you having to say a word he'd think about how it must've felt watching his child die, being here knowing that they were gone.

- he made it a habit to check up on you and be gentle with you and was surprisingly vulnerable whenever you guys talked.

- Would give you the honor to swim down with his family to give back his child to eywa

- you'd guys would be close to one another and had no problem talking about how much you missed your lose one. Would bond over memories over them.

- this connection would be what saved you from falling into oblivion with having to face your feelings

- "I understand. I cry often too and that is okay. They would be happy to see us like this, overcoming something so hard."

NEYTIRI

- would be soulless for a little while, the pain would be so overwhelming for her that sometimes it would bubble into anger

- seeing you would instantly remind her of them making her quite bitter towards you. It would make her even angrier to see you smile knowing that she'd never see theirs again

- would be proud her child could be so brave but so anguished that they had to be

- would make it up in her mind immediately that you were not worthy for her child to die

- you guys would avoid each other like a plague. You know neytiris stance and felt it would be a sign of respect to leave her be

- it would be an extremely long time until you guys talked. It would be surprisingly initiated by her while you were out picking fruits. You'd see her out the corner of your eye immediately assuming that she was just passing by. But to your surprise she started to pick fruits as well, from her shaking hand you could tell she was nervous. She's stare at you until she'd speak.

"What were they like in their last moments? Did they...say anything?"

You'd be quick to answer. Nobody had ever asked you this and out of everyone you felt she deserved to hear it. She listened so intently as you talked about how they comforted you even while dying. How you told them that you were eternally grateful, how you told them, "I see you in this world and in the next." How they died with a smile on the lips. Neytiri would choke up and let tears fall, you hadn't seen her this vulnerable since the passing ceremony. She nodded her head at your words and smiled weakly. You'd apologize to her and she would stare at you analyzing your face saying, "I am sorry you had to see." But you'd tell her that she doesn't need to apologize to you. After sitting down and talking about them, and her hearing how heartbreaking it has been for you with survivors guilt she would tilt her head. She felt quite sad for you to see how you invalidated your own feelings so much. She'd never apologize for mourning her child the way she did but from then on she'd visit you. Ask questions about them, or sometimes do small tasks with you. Some part of her saw them inside of you and she couldn't help but come around.

- it would take awhile more but she would get surprisingly comfortable with you. Finding comfort in the fact she could be around the person her child felt needed to be here. She felt as though it would be wrong to not know you.

- being closer to one another in such a way would save you both, Neytiri would finally find peace in what had happened, but she'd never get back that piece of her that died when they did. And you as well.

- "I see them in you. At first it made me angry, I hated it and I hated you. Now I can't help but smile to see shadows of them inside you. Thank you for keeping my child's memory alive."
