Chris and William both have terrible insomnia. Chris suffers from terrible nightmares and is constantly awake and alert with his flashlight (much to the confusion of everyone he wakes up by flashing down the hallway). William just can't sleep, no matter how hard he tries, and usually does paperwork or works nightshifts just for something to do rather than trying in vain to get to sleep.
This is why they usually resemble the walking dead whenever they attend school/work. The circles under their eyes never go away and if they go too long without sleeping, they start hallucinating.
