Michael could pass on to the afterlife any time he wants, but he chooses not to. He stays in the human world to try and help people to atone for his past mistakes, and refuses to finally be laid to rest until he can earn Chris's forgiveness. Neither of them seem to be relenting, and every time one of Michael's bodies/animatronics is destroyed, he possesses another one. He's been repeating this cycle for years to no avail, and desperately wants to make amends with his brother, who want nothing to do with him anymore.
