I rubbed my face in frustration as I stared at the two plastic sticks in my hand. I have no idea what possessed me to buy the smiley face one's, but my smile definitely does not match that of those on the sticks.

I should've known better. This shouldn't be happening to me. It doesn't help that the father isn't a reliable boyfriend or fiancé. No. It's a fuck buddy.

The father of my baby is none other than Sam Wilson, a notable man whore known among my friends and acquaintances. He is quite literally the last person I would have chosen to father my children.

So as I sit here with a tight feeling in my chest and unshed tears burning my eyes, I grabbed my phone and blocked him on all social media sites as well as his number. Might as well take away the opportunity for him to ever disappoint me.

It was a month later that I found Sam at my front door. He looks stressed and he let out a sigh of relief as he saw me in front of him. I already knew that he knew about the pregnancy. It didn't take long for my friends to spill the apparently hot gossip. I knew it was inevitable based purely on the fact that my best friend Natasha was dating one his best friends, Bucky. And Bucky can't keep a secret if his life depends on it.

"Sugar, I'm ready to step up," he started, "I'm ready to help you and be in our babies life."

"I appreciated the offer, but no thanks," I declined, moving to shut the door. Before the door could meet the frame his hands pushed it back open.

"What? What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I said, Sam." I rolled my eyes. "No offense, but you're not the man I want to raise my children with. You're the most irresponsible person I know!"

"I can be responsible, Sugar!" He argued.

"Sam, you're the biggest bachelor I know. When we started seeing each other casually you told me twelve times that you would be seeing other people and if I knew what was best for me I should do the same."

"A baby changes things!" He finally pushed his way into my apartment and I shut the door in defeat.

"A baby changes nothing. If you couldn't love me before a baby, you can't love me after one." I almost felt bad for the broken look on his face, but the pain we're feeling now is nothing compared to the pain we would feel after getting tried and failed at being involved.

"I've loved you since the moment I met you." His voice broke and tears fell down his face.

"No, you haven't." I opened my door again. "Goodbye, Sam."

For two more months after that I avoided Sam at all costs, as well as the sympathetic stares from Nat and Bucky. Sam asked Bucky to check on me every time he went to see Nat, and every time Bucky would ask me if I could just give him a chance. It's a question I never answered.

I had been successful in avoiding Sam, but unsuccessful in avoiding his spy. Steve. Now Steve and I had always been close, in fact he was the one who introduced me to Sam, but I don't think I'd ever seen him as much as I have these last two months. He's gotten into the habit of showing up at least three times a week to my flower shop, and once a week he's at my front door because he 'accidentally' bought too many groceries. I would pretend to believe him. Even though I could clearly see him texting Sam updates about me. My favorite so far being the text that read, 'little bump🥺'.
