Chapter 10: Weirder by the Day

I woke up with the bright sunlight streaming through the thin white laced curtains that hung flowing against the window.

I looked at the gold pendulum clock, proving that I overslept again. It was half passed nine in the morning.

“Good morning.” Jenny beamed, tightening the knot of her white silken robe as she came out of the bathroom. I nodded in response as I noticed that Lourdes is nowhere to be seen.

“Breakfast is ready.” Lourdes proclaimed as she barged into my room, sweating in her track suite. She must have woken early to run lapses. I got up the bed and went straight to the bathroom. After I washed up, I slipped into a pair of comfortable sweat pants and plain white tank top. Breakfast was again pancakes which  of course, I enjoyed a lot.

“Ready for school tomorrow?” Aunt Veronica asked as she sipped her cup of odd looking viscous red tea. Jenny answered in my behalf even before I could.

“She’ll be like totally ready with our help. Right Lorry?” She elbowed her sister Lourdes as she agreed.

“They’ve been a lot of help.” I answered as Aunt Veronica gave me a reassuring smile.

My entire morning was spent on a lot of stuff with Jenny and Lourdes. Jenny picked what I should were which were already set to be used for the entire week and what accessories I should pair them with. Lourdes was making me memorize the school map and my schedules as she taught me further on how to use my phone. Afternoon came and they started packing their clothes to go back home.

My other Aunts were all packed as we went downstairs to the living room. They waited until twilight before they went out.

Yesterday, three black SUVs were in our garage and a couple of convertibles were parked along the garden. Aunt Juliet, Jenny and Lourdes got into one SUV, and as Aunt Olivia drove the other one.

I concluded that the missing SUV belonged to the Ravenhearsts who went home last night as the two convertibles were of Mrs. Lim and Mrs. Garcia.

I wonder why they brought cars with them. I thought they were our neighbors who lived few blocks away. Why not walk?

Everybody’s getting weirder by the day.

I came inside as mother sat in the dining table, waiting for the maids to finish preparing. She looked lonely, sad as her two married sisters left. Now it was us again. Us and off course her four loving sisters. I sat beside her, feeling the necessity to do so.

“How have you been, darling?” She asked as the maid laid the last plate on our long mahogany dining table.

“Fine, mother. I’ve had so much fun in their company. I’m glad that you came out with the idea of the sleepover.” I said feeling the need of making her feel better with my words. With that, she smiled silently.

“Your Aunt Olivia has told me something.” She opened. My eyes grew wider as memories of her bedtime story came back to me. I looked at her as she avoided my eyes. What did she tell her? The inner me had her eyes wide as if accused by blunder.

Did she say I accused her of being a vampire? Did she say I’ve become rude? What?

“She said you have been growing up fast and this amnesia has brought you back your innocence.” She smiled as she tucked my stray sienna hair behind my ear. I looked hard on her eyes, studying if she was lying or hiding something but all I saw was sincerity in those pale green pools of eternity.

“Mother?” I spoke out of the blue. She stopped before her spoon reached her thin pressed red tinted lips. “Do I look like my father?” She was taken aback by my inquiry as she straightened her back against the thin plush pillow that rested between the back of the chair and hers. There was deafening silence in the room. Even my Aunts froze with eyes on me.
