LABYRINTH DAY 2

"OH, MY GODS, NICO!" VERONICA CRIED, RUSHING FORWARD AND DRAGGING THE KID INTO HER ARMS.

He stared at her in bewilderment at the sudden hug before he wrapped his arms around her as well, dropping his sword somewhat hesitantly. Veronica felt her eyes water and willingly let the tears fall. "Oh, thank the gods you're okay! I've been looking for you since you disappeared and I just didn't—"

"Ronnie, what are you doing here?" Nico asked.

She laughed weakly, pulling back to get a better look at him. "I've been looking all over for you," she replied. "I just..."

She sniffled and pulled him back for another hug. "I've even dabbled in magic to find you. Believe me, kid, coming up with spells on the spot is not easy."

Nico gave her a half-hearted grin and shook his head. "I knew you had magic. You said it was just a mutation."

"Yeah, I was wrong," Veronica admitted. "But—"

"Hate to break up the reunion," Annabeth said, "but we need to hurry up and find a way to navigate the Labyrinth. Luke, invasion, tight schedule. Remember?"

Nico pulled back from Veronica at the reminder that they weren't alone. He glared at the others and picked his sword back up. "Ronnie, get away from them."

"Neeks, put the sword down," Veronica said, stepping back.

"They let my sister die!" Nico's voice trembled with rage. "They're here to kill me!"

"No, honey, no one's here to kill you," Veronica denied, shaking her head.

"It's true," Percy said. He raised his hands. "What happened to Bianca was—"

"Don't speak her name!" Nico shouted. "You're not worthy to even talk about her!"

"Nico, calm down!" Veronica yelled. "Put the sword away!"

"You're on their side, Ronnie?" Nico asked, his voice filled with hurt and betrayal.

"I'm on your side," she said. "I promise. I'm here for you. Now just put the sword away and let's—"

"Wait a minute," Annabeth pointed at Geryon. "How do you know our names?"

The three-bodied man winked, and Veronica gagged. "I make it my business to keep informed, darlin'. Everybody pops into the ranch from time to time. Everyone needs something from ole Geryon. Now, Mr. di Angelo, put that ugly sword away before I have Eurytion take it form you."
