Tip 1 - Notepad

You never know when inspiration will strike. So get or find a notebook to write in.

- You can also write on a computer, but you don't always have it with you (I don't know about you, but I don't).

- Choose the notebook that you are most comfortable with (sounds weird, but it's true).

- If you plan to draw as well, get a blank sheet. If you're just going to write, there's a ruled stapler for you.

At one point I even recorded my thoughts as an audio recording - I quickly abandoned that because I couldn't listen to myself (it was awful).

Update to 2023:

I last updated this story (original version) in 2021, and I've had some chapter concepts here since 2019 (how time flies!).

How do I look at this chapter now?

I use my laptop almost all the time now and it has become my main source where I write down all my ideas, concepts, and outlines. I have it with me almost all the time now :-)

As for summarizing ideas, in lectures on how to write an undergraduate thesis, the professor recommended we get a blank unlined notebook. That's the one I'd recommend the most.

Of course, I recommend a notebook that you like, because no one wants to write in an ugly one, right?
