Chapter 31: the trick is to keep breathing

Alex still couldn't believe what had happened a week ago despite the time she had to let in sink into but all she could think about was what was meant to be a fun bonding weekend with her brothers and turned into them being testing for a genetic heart condition that could affect whether they continued playing basketball or not leading her to where she current was which was sitting on another hospital bed. While Nathan's tests results came back negative for HCM and Lucas refused to even take his test for the heart condition, Alex's own blood results came back showing some kind of anomaly meaning that she had to go the hospital in Tree Hill for further testing and despite the fear that she felt after hearing those words from the doctor she still hadn't told her mom about either the HCM screening test or the results that had come from it. She knew that she needed to tell her mom and her other loved ones about the results but she wanted to wait until she knew for certain what was going on with her and give herself time to comprehend it fully before telling other people about whatever it was

" Alexandra Scott? Sorry to make you wait, I'm Dr Barnes. " the doctor said as he came into the room seeing her sitting on the hospital bed as he looked down at the chart in his hand as he realised how young the patient in front of him was for this kind of news

" it's fine, between all the blood tests and stuff I've been taking all week I'm kind of used it by now. Oh and you can just call me Alex, everyone does" Alex said trying to hide her nerves and anxious over whatever the doctor might say next in terms of her results

" okay then, Alex. So as you know you were asked to come in to do some more tests following up from some anomalies that showed up in your HCM blood tests" the doctor said as he sat down on a stool sitting across from her as he summarised everything

" yeah, I'm sorry I don't mean to sound rude but could we get to the part where you tell me what's actually wrong with me? It's been a long week" Alex said anxious to know already what was going on with her as the doctor simply smiled softly as he understood her

" fair enough. Well your blood test shows that your blood sugar levels are way too high, at first we believed it may have been a fluke but the other tests seemed to prove my original theory. You have diabetes" Dr Barnes said as he waited for the teenager's reaction

" I'm sorry, did you say diabetes?" Alex said wanting to check that she had heard the doctor correctly since that was the last thing that she had thought he was going to say as she tried to comprehend what he was saying and what this would mean for her

" I did, from the tests we've done so far I'd say it's type 1 diabetes meaning that your pancreas isn't producing insulin anymore and therefore the glucose you need isn't going where it needs to" the doctor said trying to keep his explanation simply for her to understand

" I don't get it. I mean call me dumb but surely I'd know if there as something like that wrong with me. I haven't any symptoms of diabetes, not that I ever thought it was possibly for me to get it" Alex said as she voiced her concerns allowed as she thought aloud
