-POV Maira-

The dwarves had decided to leave before Gandalf finished his conversation with the Elven girl, which, in my humble opinion, I think is unwise. But who asks for my opinion these days? The youth of today can be so disrespectful. But all joking aside, we are now at a narrow and dangerous mountain pass. It's raining heavily, and Thorin yells, "Hold on!" Bilbo nearly trips into the chasm below, but Dwalin manages to pull him back in time. Thorin continues, "We must find shelter!"

Suddenly, Dwalin shouts, "Watch out!" Everyone looks up to see a massive boulder flying over them and hitting the mountain, causing a small stone avalanche. Balin then shouts, "This is no thunderstorm; it's a thunder battle! Look!" A large stone giant stands up from the mountain and rips a boulder from the side of the mountain. Bofur exclaims, "Well, bless me, the legends are true. Giants; Stone Giants!" While I think, 'Holy cow, I completely forgot about them. How bad can our luck be?' Thorin yells, "Take cover; you'll fall!" Kilí asks, "What's happening?"

One giant that had grabbed the boulder throws it high into the air, and another stone giant appears from behind, getting hit in the head. The dwarves yell at each other to brace and hold on, and the rocks beneath their feet begin to give way from all the vibrations and the impact of the falling rocks. The ground between some of the dwarves splits; part of the group is on one side, and part on the other. Filí yells, "Kili! Grab my hand! Ki..." As the two stone giants fight with their fists, the dwarves hold on tightly as they are flung around. One of the groups manages to jump to a different spot. A third stone giant appears, and it throws a boulder at the head of one of the first two. That one falls over; as the first half of the dwarves watches, it appears to them that the other group of dwarves has been smashed to bits. The injured stone giant loses its footing and falls down the chasm. Thorin yells, "No! No! Kili!" The company rushes over to the other part, but fortunately, they are still alive. Balin exclaims, "We're all right! We're alive!"

While all this is happening, I can't help but think, 'Oh yes, take your time, leave us hanging here, we can wait.' But finally, Bofur asks, "Where's Bilbo? Where's the Hobbit?" Ori spots us hanging on the edge of the cliff and says, "There!" pointing at us. Dwalin yells, "Get him!" As Ori slides on the ground trying to grab Bilbo, Bilbo almost slips, but he manages to grasp onto another handhold. I start to sweat, not that the fall will kill me, but it will hurt like hell. Then, Thorin swings down from the cliff and helps pull Bilbo up. Now Thorin almost falls, but Dwalin manages to pull him up with much effort. 'Okay, maybe I misjudged their luck. They have some next-level luck that no one has died yet!' Dwalin says, "I thought we'd lost our burglar." Thorin replies, "He's been lost ever since he left home. He should never have come. He has no place amongst us. Dwalin!" I think, somewhat miffed. But then I question why I am trying to defend Bilbo. Maybe because he has been such a good hiding spot, and honestly, I don't know, and I don't really care.

The company walks for a bit before finding a cave. Dwalin looks and says, "It looks safe enough." But Thorin decides to search the back of the cave, stating, "Search to the back; caves in mountains are seldom unoccupied." Dwalin looks until the back saying, "There's nothing here." Glóin wants to start a fire, saying, "Right then! Let's get a fire started." But Thorin stops him, saying, "No, No fires, not in this place. Get some sleep. We start at first light." Balin replies, "We were to wait in the mountains until Gandalf joined us. That was the plan." Thorin answers him saying, "Plans change. Bofur, take the first watch."

-Time skip brought to you by Maira sleeping, dreaming about the one ring-

I wake up and see Bilbo standing up. I think, 'What is he doing?' He starts to walk with his walking stick, but Bofur, who is still on watch, asks him, "Where do you think you're going?" Bilbo answers, "Back to Rivendell." I think, 'Is he trying to chicken out? I mean, I understand if he is homesick, but that's not cool.'
