"What are we playing?" I asked, going up to Bella, Melanie and April.

They turned to me and April replied in a harsh tone, "You're not invited! Go away!"

I stomped my foot stubbornly.

"Why are you being so not nice?" I demanded.

"Because we don't like you anymore!" Melanie retorted.

I looked over at Bella with pleading eyes. She diverted her gaze and looked at April instead.

"Bella, come play with me!" I shouted suddenly.

"No leave her alone!" April shouted back, pushing my shoulder.

I immediately felt enraged and stomped my foot on the ground again furiously.

"You're the one being mean!"

"Push her April!" Melanie called, hostility present and clear in her voice.

April obliged and pushed me again, so tears came to my eyes. I didn't understand why they were being so nasty to me.

"Aw, go cry about it!" Melanie snarled.

Getting in my face, she jabbed, "Cry baby!"

I retaliated, slapping her. The brown haired girl jumped back and cried, "Ow!"

Tears formed in her eyes and she began crying and shouting.

"Miss!" Melanie screamed, tears coming from her eyes.

April came over to me as Bella went to Melanie.

"Anastasia hit me!" I heard Melanie's wails as April grabbed my wrist and began shaking it.

"Get off me!" I yelled, trying to pull away and punching her stomach in response.

I stepped backwards as I saw April double over in pain. I was - honestly - shocked with what I'd just done. Two teachers came running over and I turned and ran. I heard Miss Temple calling me back but I just ran until I came to a corner of the school building. I sat down with my knees to my chest and began to cry, rocking back and forth.

------

I didn't know how long I'd been sitting there crying until Miss Hartley sat down beside me.

"Hey Ana," she said to me with a smile.

I buried my face in my knees and sniffed.

"What happened earlier?" she asked.

I shrugged.

"Ana, you know why you hit Melanie," the kind woman pressed.

"They didn't let me play with them and told me I wasn't being nice to Bella," I mumbled.

"Were you being mean to Bella?"

"No!" I protested. "I told her to play with me instead but-"

Miss Hartley put a hand on my small knee.

"Don't worry sweetheart, I believe you," she replied. "I think Melanie and April may have been bullying you."

"Bullying?" I asked, not really understanding.

"What they've said and what you've said and done makes me think so, yes."

I looked away.

"Can I see my mama?" I asked.

Right now I just wanted to hug her tightly. Feel her, smell her perfume.

"Of course sweetie, we've already called your mom," Miss Hartley replied. "But right now you need to come inside."

She looked up at the sky that was rapidly gathering clouds and stood up. I stood up and held her hand as we walked back inside.

------

I sat in the principal's office with my mom beside me, holding my hand comfortingly.

"Who are these girls anyway?" mom asked the principal. "I thought she was friends with Bella?"

The principal rubbed his beard and replied, "They're Bella's friends but they don't seem to want to be friends with Anastasia too. Bella has said that they've been quite mean to Anastasia but Bella didn't want to get involved."

"Mama, I thought Bella was my best friend?" I asked.

"Baby, you can make it up with her or make new friends," mom replied, rubbing her thumb over the side of my hand gently.

The conversation between my mom and the principal went on for some time, until the principal eventually spoke directly to me.

"Ana, how about you go back to the classroom?" he suggested. "The class are making paper planes."

I nodded eagerly. I'd made paper planes once with dad and it was so fun! I got up and went to the door.

"Bye mama!" I called.

"See you after school sweetie," she replied with a reassuring smile.

I went to my classroom and when I got in, a boy came up to me. He had a lopsided grin on his face.

"Hi," he greeted, holding a blue paper plane in his hand. "Want to play?"

I nodded and said, "I need to make one!"

The boy grabbed my wrist with his free hand and took me to the table where there was a ready made pink plane.

"I'm Peter by the way!" the boy introduced himself.

"Anastasia, or Ana," I replied. "Can you be my new friend?"

Peter nodded eagerly.

"Yes yes yes!"
