Inner Eye
The sun was up, and I shot straight in bed. My breathing was heavy, another nightmare clouding my mind. I was trembling slightly. Shaking my head, I went towards the bathroom. The sun was just peaking in through my window. Mary would still be asleep. I couldn't stop the sight that left my lips, it was another night of only 5 hours of sleep.
The warm water of a shower worked away my dream slowly. I relaxed under the spray for a long while before toweling myself off and dressing. When I went to the living room, it was empty, and the clock red 6:oo. I grabbed a water bottle and a sticky note. I jotted down a note for mom, so that when she woke up, she wouldn't freak out.
I strapped on my shoes and went out for a morning run. I went towards the park about a block away. The run was working my muscles, and I felt alive. Stepping foot on the path that lead through the park, I picked up speed. I looked around, watching everything. Something caught my eye and i slowed. I looked over to see a little girl, about six, walking around the grass, playing jump rope. A man, about my age, was sneaking up behind her. He was wearing all black, and was broad. He towered over the little girl. They walked behind trees, and my curiosity got the better of me. I followed, hiding behind the trees.
The girl stopped jumping, being cast in a shadow from the guy. My heart was pounding. The girl turned to face him, and said something lowly. I walked forwards slowly, and could hear him laughing. His laugh was menacing, cold and dark.
"You should have known not to prance around in the park alone."
Another person dressed in all black came up behind the little girl, and locked her arms behind her. He had blonde, shoulder length hair and bright blue eyes. The back of the other guy was to me. He pulled out a knife and held it to the girl's throat.
"Where are the others?" the blonde asked tightening his grip. "You travel in groups of three."
The girl laughed harshly, her voice bitter and low. "I won't tell you anything."
The bigger guy growled. He pressed the tip of the knife to the girl's throat, drawing a drop of blood.
I held my hands over my mouth, stopping the tiny gasp from being heard.
"Give us information," The blonde said.
The girl glared, "Like hell I will!"
"I guess we'll just have to kill you," the guy pushed the knife deeper in her throat, and more blood slowly dripped.
"Wait!" she said, a voice almost shrill. "The Posheidon has been chosen! A new Pize!"
"Those are rumors," the blonde said softly, his eyes sincere. "They've been around for years."
"The underworld is buzzing around about it! It's true! The powers are awakening!"
The big dark guy growled. He shoved the knife all the way through the little girl's throat. She smiled wickedly and gurgled on her blood, laughing.
"You'll never find the Posheidon!"
"Damn North, we could have used it for information."
"It wouldn't have told us anything else."
I gasped, stumbling back. I tripped, roots of trees tangling on my feet. Three heads swiveled in my direction. The two dropped the little girl, and I was struggling to get to my feet. The two were advancing towards me. My eyes widened. My shoe was stuck in the ground.
"So, we've found another demon?" the blonde said.
I was struggling to stand. Finally, my shoe loosened, and I stood up, and ran.
I was running as fast as I could, adrenaline pumping in my blood. I weaved between the trees. Their footsteps pounded against the ground behind me.
Someone landed against me, hard. I was pulled up, and pinned to a nearby tree.
Now this was true fear.
