I couldn't tell if it was day or night. My orb danced in my hand. Suddenly, my wrist vibrated, tingling up my arm.
I looked at it in astonishment before realizing it was my bracelet. I opened it up and saw a name. My heart fluttered.
Clicking it, voices echoed from it quietly.
"Owen?" I whispered.
"Ms. Sorenson." His voice was perfection as always. The room went silent. I could practically see them holding their breath. "Are you okay?"
I wanted to laugh at his question. "Define okay."
I could hear him release the air he was holding. Someone chuckled nearby. "Pookie, are you joking?" came Sean's light-hearted voice.
My lips pinched into a small smile."Perhaps I am?"
I giggled. "Fuck, baby you scared the shit out of us." North's voice was soft.
"I'm sorry." That's when an emptiness set in. We were separated by miles and walls.
"Mr. Taylor," Owen said in warning. I could hear North grumble. "Ms. Sorenson, do you know where you are?"
"Yes," I replied softly. "Where I was last time."
"Fuck.." someone breathed.
My heart leaped into my throat. "Gabriel? Is that you?"
"Yes, it's me trouble."
Weight melted off of my shoulders. "Are you alright?"
"Of course I am. Why the fuck are you worrying about me when you're in hell?"
I wasn't sure if I should take that seriously. "Listen, Sang, it's going to be harder saving you this time around. They will have more security than last time." Kota's voice was calming, but I knew that he was right.
There were footsteps down the hall from my door. "I gotta go." I whispered. "Someone's coming."
"Be safe Sang." Owen said before shutting off his line. The little light that had flooded the room from my connection cut off and darkness soaked the room. A shiver racked my spine.
A knock landed on my door. The person followed the knock by peaking their head inside my room.
"Hello," a girl's voice rang softly. A soft, glowing light filled my room. "Mr. Hendricks wanted me to get you for dinner." She stated, stepping fully into the room.
She had pixie brown hair and a soft, sympathetic smile. "Oh."
"Let's get you dressed up in something and be on our way." She headed to my closet and began ruffling through the cloth.
She pulled out a skirt and blouse with sandals. "I'll be in the hall when you're done."
I dressed quickly and skidded outside to where the girl was waiting. She looked my age, was taller, and more athletic.
"Ready?" I nodded.
We began to walk the opposite direction that the boys had taken me. Flashes of the last time I was here knocked around my head.
"Oh, I'm Karen by the way." the girl's voice said.
"Hi, I'm Sang."
"Pretty." she stated.
The hall opened up into a door. She ushered me into it. The room was large, still dark, and spacious with tables and noise. There were a lot of people. It was like a school cafeteria.
No one noticed us as Karen lead me to a food line.
Karen started talking to the person in front of her as I awkwardly stood behind.
The heat of a person sidled up behind me, and I felt a hand on my hip.
"New girl?" he chuckled. His voice lowered as he pressed into me. My heart rocketed into my throat, pounding furiously as an uncomfortable feeling set in. The man's lips had my stomach tight in a spinning knot. "I like fresh meat."
Part 45!
Karen whirled around so fast that she scared me. She looked murderous. "Greg, if you don't back away and go back to your cronies, I'm going to punch your face so hard , it'll send your ancestors rolling in their graves."
The guy, Greg, stepped back with his hands up. "Whoa there, I was only joking around."
"Yeah, well go joke around somewhere else."
I recognized him at once. He was the one helping the Jade girl in my first capture. I could still smell the menthol smell of cigarettes.
Karen turned her chocolate brown eyes towards me. "I'm sorry about him. He's a douche to every girl around here. Hang out with me and you won't have to deal with him."
"Thank you," I said softly.
Her face lit up in a smile. "Anything for a friend. Come on, the line is moving up."
Her words through me into a loop. Were we really friends?
As we moved along in the line, we got trays and food. "So," she started. "Have you picked the item you're going to keep?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Well, you get to keep one thing from wherever you came from."
"What did you pick?"
She chuckled. "I kept my volleyball."
I smiled at her. She lead me to a table. A big guy sat across from us in lettered jacket. "Who's this Karen?"
Karen spoke after she swallowed a bite. "Sang, new girl." She shoveled more food into her mouth.
"No one's allowed to touch Rocky's girl," another person butted in, sitting down next to the first person.
"No wait, let me talk to her." the guy got up and knelt down next to me. "Will you marry me?"
I was blushing ferociously. "No?"
"Way to be firm Sang," Karen joked. I looked down at my hands, away from the both of them.
"I told you, Rocky's girl is Rocky's girl."
"May I go back to my room?" I asked Karen.
"Sure," she got up and we dumped our trays. As we were walking out, I heard a soft, familiar voice say, "Great, you scared her away Rocky,"
"Shut up Jay."
