Alabaster Scythes
I turned, startled. North's shadow peaked in from the light shining against his back in the hall.
"I was reading," I said softly. The book had clattered to the ground.
His hands were running through his hair, "Dammit baby, you scared the living hell out of us."
"Us?"
"We've been looking for you for an hour, no one knew where you were."
"Oh," I looked down at my hands. The floorboards creaked under his weight as he moved closer. "I'm sorry."
He sat next to me and lifted my head, his finger under my chin. "It's alright baby." He pulled me into his arms, and I was comforted by the gesture.
"I didn't mean to scare you," I mumbled into his shirt.
His hand ran soothingly up and down my spine. I released a sigh into his shirt before pulling back.
"What were you reading Sang, baby?"
I reached down and pulled the book off of the floor, handing it to him.
His face hardened. "How far did you make it?" he asked, and a sense of panic was laced into his voice.
Where was I last at? "I read to the mark of Cain, where that who tries to harm the person adorning the rune mark will be attacked with seven times the amount of power that it inflicted.
"You," he paused, looking shocked. "You read half of the book in less than an hour."
North pulled out his scanner and sent a message. I noticed some of the rune marks that were buttons.
The door slammed open again. "Fuck, Trouble, how the hell are you not passed out?"
"Gabe," I said softly.
"Mr. Coleman, language please," the steal voice of Mr. Blackbourne
He entered the library as Gabe moved out of the way.
"Ms. Sorenson, I understand that you were reading the book of runes, how far did you make it to?"
I was biting my lip, my finger fluttering to the base of my neck. "The book was opened to the rune of remembrance. I flipped to the beginning and read to the mark of Cain."
A perfect eyebrow rose. "You read every mark between the rune of Abundance to the mark of Cain,"
"Yes I did,"
"Interesting," he said. What was so interesting? Mr. Blackbourne looked down at the scanner of his. "I've been informed that you draw symbols on your art pages sometimes?"
I nodded.
"Would you care to show me?"
"Of course," I stood up and walked towards him. North stood, too, but he didn't follow us when we walked to my room. Neither did Gabe.
I was a step behind him, and he paused. I nearly bumped into his back at the sudden stop.
"Do you walk behind the boys?"
I nodded. "It's just a natural reaction."
He frowned. "From now on, walk along side them. You are an equal."
I nodded and we were at my door.
Mr. Blackbourne opened the door for me and I walked in, grabbed the sketchbook from under my pillow and turned to him.
"let's talk in my office," he said.
In his office, I was seated in the chair in front of him.
I placed my sketchbook open on the desk so he could flip through them again. He did, slower this time. Some pictures had runes, only a few that I actually knew from the book, and others didn't.
On the last page, he froze. "Do you know this rune?"
"Like I told Victor, I've never seen it before. I didn't even know I was drawing it until it was done. Last night, I was letting my fingers do the work, not my mind."
"It's a demonic rune," his voice was soft, so quiet I had to strain to hear.
I looked at him confused. He sighed, "It's hard to explain. Let's go have breakfast, and then you can start training with Mr. Lee and Mr. Griffin."
Which one was Mr. Griffin? Kota was Lee, and Gabe was Coleman. Luke and North were Taylor. What were the other boys' names?
We walked to the kitchen in silence. When the door opened, the power of different smells had me stumbling back. Hands held tight on my waist. My heart was hammering as I looked up into steal eyes. "Mr. Blackbourne?" I asked quietly.
His lips teased my ear, "Owen, just call me Owen." he said it so only I could hear.
Heat started to battle in my cheeks with the cold blood pumping in my veins.
"Owen," I tested out. I liked the ring of it, and smiled softly. "Call me Sang," I whispered back.
He straightened up and stepped back. "You have to be more careful, we wouldn't want you to get hurt."
I nodded, and the heat in my face increased. He walked into the kitchen and I followed.
Did something just pass between us? And why does it feel like something is being created between me and each guy?
What are they doing to me?
