In the realm of Our Spellbinding Lies, magic is a hereditary, deep practice. It runs through the soul, body, and mind of its wielder. It's tied to blood and emotion. Magic wielders can be sorted into two categories: elemental mages and psychic mages. Both have pros and cons.

Elementals are the most common variety of mage in the OSL universe. However, it is still rarer than being mundane (having no magic at all). Psychic mages are least common. More on those categories in later chapters.

In OSL, individuals inherit magic from their parents and cannot otherwise gain it (with one exception discussed later). For a typical individual to have any magic in their soul, at least one of their parents must have passed it on to them. Elemental mages can only produce another elemental or a mundane. Even more surprising, two psychics will often produce an elemental child despite having the ability to birth a psychic.

Numbers are roughly as follows:

Mundane + Mundane = 100% Mundane

Elemental + Mundane = 50% Elemental, 50% Mundane

Psychic + Mundane = 20% Psychic, 40% Elemental, 40% Mundane

Elemental + Elemental = 75% Elemental, 25% Mundane

Elemental + Psychic = 20% Psychic, 60% Elemental, 20% Mundane

Psychic + Psychic = 40% Psychic, 40% Elemental, 20% Mundane

Mundanes are possible with any pair, and elementals are possible with any pair involving magic. Psychics, however, are only possible if at least one parent is psychic. For whatever mystical reason, psychic magic is more difficult to pass on. Even the most likely pairing is short of a coin flip.

There is a difference between being a true mundane and being a selective one. A true mundane cannot use magic - it is not in their blood whatsoever. An example of this is Casper.

A selective mundane has inherited magic within, but doesn't make use of it. An example of this is Amber Xavierras. A selective mundane can still pass on magic; a true mundane cannot, for they have none in their DNA.

Magic energy leaks from the eyes of its user during any usage, and from their hands during some. Every mage has their own unique color and shape of magic. Color and shape are heavily dependent on ancestry, but not entirely. It often manifests as smoke or sparks, but can be seen in more complex shapes such as diamonds or sigils.

Furthermore, a mage's energy can be any color other than brown or pure white. It can be black only under special circumstances discussed in a later chapter. Some mages even have multicolored magic.
