Steam from the coffee cup wafted over my face in warm wisps as I held the mug close to my lips.  My half closed eyes gave away the fact that I was not awake yet, but Jake didn't seem to be taking the hint.  He was jabbering on about something he seemed to be excited about and I really was trying to listen.  My ears took in the sounds of the words he was forming, but my brain refused to translate them into whatever language I could understand before caffeine.  I took a large gulp of my coffee and then an even larger sigh in attempt to wake myself up some more.
"What do you think?  It's just an idea, we can do whatever you want, birthday girl."
My brain processed his words at a sloths pace.  Once my sleepy self was sure of what they meant, I looked up at him with a light frown.  He was grinning at me with that look of fondness in his eyes that so often made my heart stammer.  It seemed like I'd need a few more chugs of coffee before I was functioning enough for that.
"It's not my birthday," I mumbled out the correction.
His grin grew.  "It's definitely your birthday."
"No, just-" I wasn't awake enough to prove it verbally.  "Hand me the calendar and I'll show you."
I gestured to the paper calendar I kept on the fridge with my hand.  With a chuckle, he got up from the table and plucked it from the fighter jet magnet that held it there.  I took another long sip of coffee as he closed the few steps to my side and set the calendar on the table in front of me.  I glanced at the little white squares, trying to remember what day of the week it was.  Friday?  Yeah, because we had both taken the day off specially so we could have a long weekend together... and because it was indeed my birthday!  Oh well, it was too early to be smart anyway.
"Oh, never mind.  Happy birthday to me." I shrugged before chugging the rest of my coffee.
"Happy birthday to you, my darlin'."
Jake wrapped his arms around me from behind and pressed a chaste kiss to my temple.  I gently grasped his wrist with one hand, letting my thumb stroke softly over the skin there.  Closing my eyes and soaking in the moment, I could help but smile.  I was so lucky that he put up with my morning brain, well, lack of it.
"So, what do you want to do today?" He murmured in my ear.
I turned my face up towards his with a playful grin.  "Nap?"
"I'll get you more coffee," He chuckled as he reached for my now empty mug.
More coffee was a good idea.  We could plan the day out when my brain was working again.  In the meantime, a sleepy brain was the perfect excuse to sit at the table and admire my sweet, good looking boyfriend.
