"I feel as though I'm going mad. Like I've hallucinated the whole interaction."

I look through the wares of the back corner of Honeydukes, Daphne at my side. In a hush, I told her of what transpired at Twilfitt's, avoiding the rest of the group browsing the front of the shop.

"I simply do not understand him," Daphne huffs, peering at Malfoy through the shelves. I watch him now too, snatching the last Bertie Bott's case from Pansy's hands. She gasps and hits his shoulder, attempting to grab it back. He laughs, tossing it over the center display to Theo, who grins and turns to the cashier, dropping a handful of galleons and pocketing the sweets.

I shake my head, a smile growing on my lips. I quickly wipe the evidence from my face. "Me neither."

December 14th, 1995

I sit on top of the bathroom counter, Pansy standing in front of me, fussing over my makeup. Daphne is on the counter beside me, sitting crisscross with her chin in the palm of her hands.

"Who did we land on for tonight?" Pansy asks, sparing Daphne a glance.

"Just Crabbe," Daphne shrugs. She picks at her nails and Pansy swats her hands down, scolding her for ruining the new polish.

We continue getting ready, catching each other up on the various gossip we've heard throughout the week. Pansy finishes my makeup and I turn around, letting her intricately braid the top portion of my hair back.

After we're finished, we all change into our gowns. Pansy has on a deep blue A-line dress, with a sheer overlay on the torso ending in long sleeves. It compliments her coloring perfectly, finishing with a thin matching headband behind her bangs. Daphne has on an emerald green dress with a tiered skirt covered in lace, her hair simply curled with two thin braids pinned back. Pansy looks at each of us in turn, a wide smile on her face.

"You both look just gorgeous!" She exclaims, clapping her hands. "Let's go meet the boys."

The three of us walk together to the Great Hall, our respective dates having planned to meet us outside. We chat to Pansy about her fledgling crush on Goyle, which she says is really nothing serious. I know she's only attempting to distract herself from Malfoy, although neither Daphne nor I would dare say that.

We reach the final set of stairs, coming from above as we had to take an alternate route from the dungeons (horrific explosion in the potions lab), and I can see the line of boys waiting for us. Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle stand in a small circle, talking amongst themselves. Blaise and Theo must've already gone inside with their dates, both from Ravenclaw.

Crabbe notices us first, tapping the other two on their shoulders and pointing in our direction.

I watch as Malfoy turns around, his eyes finding mine instantly. Life fades into slow motion. He tucks his hand into his pocket, his dress robes opening to reveal his neatly pressed white shirt, adorned by the baby blue bow tie. He only looks at my dress for a moment, taking me in with a swift glance before latching his gaze back with mine. His eyes seem to savor my face, taking in the light blush blooming on my cheeks and the dark red of my lips Pansy insisted I go with. He scans my face once, then once more. He smirks, although I swear it's more of a smile.
