It had been weeks, maybe even months, since you last saw Michael. He was busy touring the world while you stayed home, taking care of the sprawling mansion you two had recently moved into. The house was grand and beautiful but felt overwhelmingly empty without him. With hardly any staff-only a couple of maids and a security team on the grounds-you were waiting for Michael to hire more help and ensure your privacy was secure.
One quiet evening, you found yourself in the bedroom you shared with Michael, tidying up. The room was filled with his presence: his favorite book lay open on the nightstand, his cologne lingered in the air, and a shirt he had worn was draped over the chair. You hadn't slept well in a while, missing Michael's touch, his voice, his love. The separation was tearing at your heart, just as you knew it was for him.
The phone rang loudly, jolting you out of your thoughts. Startled, you walked over to the bed and sat down on Michael's side, picking up the handset and placing it to your ear.
"Hello?"
"Hi, baby," came Michael's familiar voice, warm and soothing.
"Michael, hi. I miss you," you said, your voice quivering with emotion.
"I miss you too, babygirl. How are you?" he asked, a gentle concern in his tone.
"I'm... I'm managing. Just cleaning up right now," you replied, trying to keep your voice steady.
"Baby, we have maids for that," he said softly, a smile evident in his voice.
"Michael, it's nighttime. They're gone now. Besides, they did a lot today; I'm just tidying up the room," you explained, glancing around at the neat but still lonely space.
"Oh, okay," he chuckled, a light laugh that made your heart ache with longing. "I have a question."
"And I may have an answer," you teased lightly, trying to keep the mood light.
"Are the doors locked? Everything secured?" he asked, a hint of worry creeping into his voice.
"Yes, Michael. Everything is locked up. I double-checked the whole house before coming to the room," you reassured him, knowing his concern came from a place of love.
"Okay, baby. I'm ju-just-" his voice started to break up.
"Michael?" you called out, panic rising in your chest. "Michael, are you there?"
"Baby, I'll call you back. I have to go," he said, the call breaking up.
"I love you," you said hurriedly, fearing you might not get another chance.
"I love y-you too," he responded, the call crackling before disconnecting.
You sat there for a moment, clutching the phone, trying to steady your breathing. The house felt even emptier now. Determined to shake off the unease, you stood up from the bed and walked to the door, heading down the long hall. The silence was oppressive, each step echoing through the vast space. You double-checked all the doors and windows, making sure everything was secure.
