The morning sun slowly crept over the rugged peaks of the Santa Ynez Mountains, casting a warm, golden light through the windows of your bedroom. The soft glow bathed the room in a peaceful serenity, illuminating the floral-patterned curtains and the rumpled sheets that you and Michael lay beneath. The quiet hum of the air conditioning filled the space, a gentle reminder of the cool air it provided against the warming day outside.
You stirred in your sleep, instinctively nestling closer to Michael. His steady heartbeat thumped rhythmically beneath your cheek as your head rested on his chest. You felt the gentle rise and fall of his breathing, a soothing cadence that matched the tranquility of the morning. Unbeknownst to you, he had been awake for a while, content to watch over you as you slept, a soft smile playing on his lips as he marveled at your peaceful slumber.
Concerned that you might be cold, Michael carefully adjusted the floral covers, tucking them snugly around you. The air conditioning, set to a cool temperature throughout the house, had given the room a slight chill. As he brushed a loose strand of hair from your face, his fingers inadvertently grazed your eyelid, causing you to stir awake.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice tender and full of affection.
You smiled sleepily, snuggling closer to him. "It's okay. What time is it?" you asked, your voice still thick with sleep.
Michael glanced over at the clock on his nightstand, the soft glow of the digits reading 10:30. "Ten-thirty," he replied.
Your eyes widened as you suddenly sat up, the urgency of the late hour jolting you fully awake. "Why didn't you wake me up?" you exclaimed.
Michael chuckled, his hand gently pulling you back into his embrace. "Baby, relax. I'm off today, remember? I wanted to sleep in too, but now I'm thinking it wasn't such a good idea since the kids are up."
"Did they come in?" you asked, your voice softening as you allowed yourself to sink back into the warmth of his arms.
He shook his head. "Not yet, surprisingly. I thought they would have by now—"
Just as he spoke, the door to your bedroom flew open with a bang, and your two children—both four years old—came bursting into the room, their excited voices filling the space. "Mommy! Daddy!" they cried out in unison, racing toward the bed with boundless energy.
Your daughter, her bright eyes sparkling with excitement, leaped onto the bed with a little too much enthusiasm. Her foot landed squarely on Michael's sensitive area, and he winced, biting back a groan. You quickly placed a hand over his mouth, muffling the words that were about to escape—words that little ears shouldn't hear.
