"Niklaus!" My brother called out to the blonde. It had been a week since the festival, and they hadn't spoken since. I listened in on their conversation as he pulled my love aside. "We need to talk."

"If this is about your sister then-"

"No, listen to me," he cut him off. "I'm sorry for the other night. I know you would take good care of Madeline. I trust you, but my father was watching. I would have been in trouble had I not intervened. I hope you can understand."

"You don't despise me?" Klaus asked questioningly.

"No, you are my best friend. I could never hate you. I was only doing what would protect my own skin. If you want to be with my sister, I will not stop you. Although, one day she will be betrothed to another."

"Not if I have anything to do with it. Isaac, I have become a selfish man. I want your sister all to myself."

"Then run," he ordered him. "Run and never look back. Take her, wed her, make her happy. Protect her is all I ask."

"I swear to you that I will."

I found a smile creeping it's way onto my face as I snuck away from the pair. I hadn't ever felt so happy. Tonight was the last night I would stay in the village. Isaac would turn tonight, and then Klaus and I shall run tomorrow night. We won't look back either.

"Madeline," my mother grabbed my hand, pulling me into the cottage. "Where have you been? I've been searching for you for ten minutes."

"I apologize mother," I frowned, thinking of a quick lie. "Isaac had forgotten his lunch. I took it to him."

"You always were a terrible liar," she laughed. My eyes widened. I had been caught. "You were sneaking off to see that Mikaelson boy again, weren't you?"

"Mother, I-"

"You don't have to confess. I can tell by the look on your face. I know you better than anyone, young Madeline. I can see that you love him."

"I really do," I confirmed.

"But you must understand that your father and I want what's best for you. I'm afraid that he doesn't have much to offer you. You deserve nothing but the finest."

"There is no better than Niklaus."

"Oh darling. You're such a fool. Can't you see that the boy is tainted? He and his family only bare trouble. I think it's best that you steer clear of him."

"You're all wrong. Niklaus is everything to me."

"I'm sure he is," she chuckled, turning away. "I was once like you, Madeline. I believed that one should marry for love, but the man I loved became a monster. That's what love does to you. It gets under your skin, irritates you, controls you, and all you can do is stand idly by and watch hopelessly."

"That's the way it was for you, mother. It doesn't have to be like that for me!" I protested.

"No, it doesn't have to be, but I can guarantee you that it will be. Love is darkness. Don't let it consume you."

•••

The morning sun had risen, and I found that I hadn't slept all night. I was far too excited for tonight's events. We were running away. We were to be together.

I found myself skipping around my home, humming songs as I cleaned up the place. It was the last morning I would set the table. It was the last morning I would help mother prepare the food. It was my last day before freedom.

Screams rung out from outside. My family was quickly outside to see what the ruckus was about. My heart dropped as I spotted a sobbing Niklaus holding a lifeless Henrik. I felt a pain in my chest.

"We went out to watch the men turn to beasts," he explained through his tears. His mother only hugged him in response as the family wept for their lost loved one.

I hadn't been close to Henrik, but I knew what he meant to his brother. He brought out a side of him that I hadn't ever seen. When he played with Henrik, it was as if he were his own son. He was so good with him.

I fought the urge to run and hold Klaus as he cried. Mikael was outraged by his youngest's death. He shook in fury as he drug Esther back inside. Something didn't feel right.

Once the crowd had died down, I ran to him. I held him as he cried onto my shoulder. Behind him, I could see my father glaring at us. Isaac looked at us with an unreadable look. I made a mental note to ask about it later.

Right now Niklaus needed me. I kissed his cheek in attempt to calm him. I knew that this meant our escape would be delayed. He needed to be with his family for the time being.

"Niklaus! Get inside now!" Mikael scolded him. I wanted to hit him for being so insensitive. His son was hurting, and I knew he would make him pay.

He slowly pushed away from me, walking towards the cottage. I quickly spun him around. His eyes were glazed over in despair.

"Don't go. Don't let him blame you for this," I frowned. "Don't let him hurt you, Klaus. You deserve so much better."

"I killed him," he whispered before shrugging me off.

I watched as he stalked off to the cottage with the rest of his family. The door slammed shut, concealing the horrors within. I glanced over to see my brother still standing there teary eyed.

"I didn't realize you were so close to Henrik," I state as I walked over to Isaac. Tears were streaming down my cheeks.

"I wasn't," he shook his head.

"Then why do you cry? Is it because you were so close to Niklaus? Do you hurt for him? "

"Because I couldn't control it, Madeline," he sighed. I looked at him in confusion. "As a wolf, you are opened to this whole new world. You're stronger, faster, but it's terrifying. Your first impulse is to go for the kill. I couldn't control it."

My eyes widened in realization. He couldn't have. My brother couldn't have killed Henrik. My brother was far too kind of a person.

"No," I cried, refusing to believe what he was saying.

"I saw Niklaus and Henrik watching us. I didn't want to hurt them, but my wolf instincts took over. I killed him, Madeline. I killed a child. Niklaus will never forgive me."

I held my brother as he cried unto my shoulder. He wouldn't want to be with me when he found out about my brother's sins. I would just be a reminder of last night.

"He won't have to. He won't find out," I promise.

A/N: Whoa that chapter was crazy!

So Isaac turns out not to be a jerk by confessing that he is okay with Niklaus and Madeline, but his dad couldn't know that. And then he kills Henrik, potentially ruining everything. As you all know, the originals turn after Henrik's death so I hope y'all are ready for some vampires!
