Paedyn had left the dinner hall as soon as she had the chance, but I was being escorted back to the room they had assigned me for the trials. My brother had no trust in me when it came to staying away from my wife, I don't blame him though, I wouldn't either. But that doesn't give him the right to keep me away from her and try to get me killed. I was being led down the hall when Mak slammed his shoulder into mine.

"What the hell is wrong with you!?" I yell as he glares at me.

"What is wrong with me, is your little wife, the best friend of the love of my life is here living her best life! While Adena lays dead in the dirt of that arena without any proper burial! But Paedyn gets to come live here and be married to you, even though she killed the king! Even though she was what started this kingdom to fall into disarray under the rule of your senile brother!"

"I understand that you are hurting, but Paedyn had nothing to do with Adena's death! She still hurts from her loss to this day! She went through some of the hardest things anyone can go through! She lost her father, was forced to live on the streets, was forced into the trials as an ordinary, had her best friend killed by the murderer of her father, killed the king and was wanted for murder herself, ran to Dor without proper supplies, was hunted by me, found out her father was not her actual father, and when we finally caught a break we didn't run and was forced into an engagement with my brother, then we finally found a way out of it, but now she is risking losing me through the trials again, on top of having to deal with the woman that abandoned her in the palace! So tell me Paedyn is living her best life when she loses almost anyone who ever gets close to her?! Tell me her life is perfect. Then I'll give a damn about how you feel. I understand you lost Adena, but that doesn't give you the right to take it out on Paedyn. If you're going to take it out on someone take it out on her actual killer." I yell back.

Then Serena gets in between us trying to stop the fighting. "Boys stop it, there is no need to kill each other before we even get into the arena." She says.

"You have nowhere to speak in this place. You abandoned my wife as a baby and left her for dead." I say pushing her aside. Storming away from them and slamming my door.

I sank to the floor, sitting on my bed my head in my hands. So this was my life? A never-ending headache that was always caused by the only man who was in charge of me, the king whether that be my father, or it be my brother. A few hours pass by then I hear a knock on my door. I reluctantly stand up and make my way to the door.

I open it to see Serena. "I have nothing to say to you," I say to her as I try to close the door, before I get the chance tho she sticks her foot in the door keeping it open.

"Please you deserve an explanation, I just need you to listen, need you to understand why I left her," she says looking at me with pleading eyes.

"Fine." I stay curtly, opening the door and bringing her into the room.

She sits down on one of the chairs and starts talking.

"You see, with how much violence there is in the slums, there is sure to be some sexual violence." She starts before looking down. I nodded. She takes a deep and shaky breath before continuing. "Well, I was victim to one of those cases, when I was just fourteen. Later I discovered I was with child, my father found out, and he beat me, refusing to believe me, and he forced me out. Weeks go by and I meet a man named Edward, he was kind and took me in and cared for me, he was ordinary as well, he was my friend. But the conditions we lived in were harsh and barely considered healthy. I didn't want that life for her. I wasn't ready either. So when I approached giving birth to her I saw him. The man Paedyn grew up knowing as her father, I met his wife, knew her even. So when I heard that both she and their baby were lost, I watched him and saw that he struggled with being by himself in a home where a baby was supposed to grow up. So when I gave birth to her, I left her on his doorstep, knowing he could give her a better life than I ever could have. Never did I expect that he would be killed in such a horrible way, leaving her on her own." She took a deep breath. "I wanted to find her, tell her my story, but I knew she would probably hate me for it, not fully understanding. So I let her live her life watching from a distance. When she first entered the trials and I saw her name I left the city thinking that she was surely dead, then while in Dor I heard rumors of a shadow in the fighting rings, and I recognized you both in your brawl. I returned to the city wanting to continue my watch over her. I knew I could never truly be her mother, but I hoped that I could try to keep her safe from the shadows." She finished, taking a deep breath and wiping a few stray tears from her cheeks

I hadn't noticed but through this conversation, my fists were balled up tightly turning my knuckles white. "Serena, thank you for the closure, but that doesn't make up for everything that Paedyn had to go through or the resentment that she carries. I understand that you were young and were not ready. But there are still many things that I have to be upset about. As Paedyn's husband, it is my job to protect her and for the time being, I would prefer it if you stayed away from both of us, as I try to process what you have told me, and tell Pae."

She looked down nodding as she left the room. I tried processing what she had said to me, and all her reasons were valid. But it did not make anything that happened hurt less. But the thing that stuck out to me is that with her having Pae and fourteen or fifteen that meant she was only thirty-three or so now.

I continued to sit and think about everything that went down tonight, Pae's mom, and Adena's boyfriend. It all was just so much to deal with and I can only imagine how Pae must feel right now.

When I heard the faint knock on my door the second time that night I was not shocked to see Pae walk into the room and lay down beside me before I even had time to stand up. She immediately curled her body against me burying her head in my chest. She never said a word, but I knew that she didn't need me to, she just needed me. So I laid there contently as she slept in my arms, and soon enough I fell asleep too.

(A/N Hey everyone, since the past couple chapters have been extremely short in my standards I tried to make this one a bit longer. Anyway hope you all had a happy new years. Curently we are at 6.9 thousand reads, and it is just insane to me how far this book has come. I never expected it to gain this much traction, and I never expected people to fall in love with it the way I had when writing it. So first I want to say thank you for all the reads and the amazing comments that you have left. Secondly, thank you for nagging me for the next chapter because I surely would have forgotten without them, lol. Also on other words this book is officially over 20,000 words long, making it my longest story yet! Anyway I hope you all enjoy this chapter and I'll have the next one out soon. Enjoy your day read you later!)
