What is going on?

I think to myself as I am laying on my back in a pile of dirt. I look up at the night sky seeing the stars. The last thing I remember counting the stars, then everything went black. What happened to me? I sit up looking at my clothes, all were ripped, every single hand stitch that I had made had been ripped to shreds and battered.

Oh, Mak. What happened to him? What happened to me.

I looked around searching my surroundings, then I saw the palace, the trials just ended Pae is probably there. I started running to the palace. I phase through the walls wanting to avoid the imperials. I round a corner over and over I search through the halls, but I can't find anyone. I continue to run, hallway after hallway.

Then I see her , Pae standing jogging through the halls her hair shorter than the last time I had seen her. But something else is different that I can't quite put my finger on.

"Pae!" my voice breaks as she runs to me wrapping her arms around me.

"A!" She replies. Tears streaming down her face. "You were gone, they murdered you, broke you, broke your fingers every single one of them. Shoved a branch through your chest unjustly." She sobbed

I was dead? For how long? How was I back?

Thoughts raced through my mind. As Pae pulled away from the hug, wiping tears from her face with a faint smile.

Then I saw him, his eyes already red and swollen, Mak rounded the corner, stopping dead in his tracks.

"Dena?" His voice cracked.

"Mak!" I pulled the rest of the way away from Paedyn running into his arms.

"Oh, Dena I missed you so much." he muttered leaning down burying his face in my hair.

"I missed you too." I smiled even though I didn't even remember being gone. "I'm sorry for leaving you." I said a tear falling down my face.

"It wasn't your fault or your choice." He says holding my face in his hands.

Then it clicks what seemed different about Pae, just as I watched Kai round the corner of the hall, looking worn down and out of breath.

She was pregnant, the baggy clothes, the thicker hair, the shine to her skin.

"Oh Pae, I see you finally figured out Kai was the one, settled your restless heart, found peace" I say gently reaching my hand to place on her stomach.

"And I see you found the person to complete your happy ending." she smiled gesturing to Mak.

She looked back over to Kai as he closed the distance between them placing his arm around her.

"We're all glad you're back Adena." He said to me with a smile.

Paedyn and Kai headed back to their quarters after much argument with eachother Kai insisting on giving me and Mak time alone together.

I'm sitting on Mak's bed, his arm resting around me as I lean into him.

"How long was I gone?" I mutter.

He takes a deep breath, shaking his head at the thought. "Almost a year and a half." he murmurs

"What happened?"

"Blaire, the King mostly though. He broke your fingers, accused you of being a criminal, put you in the trials just to die. Blaire put a branch through your chest just to win." He muttered. "After, Paedyn killed King Edric in selfdefense, leaving her half dead, she ran to Dor. Weeks later Kai brought her back on the orders of the new king Kitt. When she was brought back everyone thought he would put her to death, but he didn't he forced her to be his bride. But as you would expect, that didn't stop her from being with Kai, they ended up falling pregnant, and getting married on the technicality of the matter of infidelity. Then the trials restarted, and I was brought here in place of Hera. I've been a mess Dena I almost had to close the blacksmith shop."

Tears welled in my eyes. "I'm sorry, all of this, it could have been prevented if I had just stayed out of the way."

"Dena that's not true, the king had a vendetta against Paedyn and knew how close you both were, if anything don't blame yourself blame her." He said spite filling his voice.

"No, she could not have controlled what happened, and if that's what you think of my best friend I think I'm going to have to leave." I say my words even stinging myself.

I watch as his face fills with regret. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean that. I just I grew so much anger towards her after losing you. I blamed her because it was easy. I shouldn't have done that I'm sorry please forgive me."

I knew I probably shouldn't go back or at least give it time. But I am now newly broken, right along with him.

I settled back into my place nestled in his arms. "FIne, but you owe me a lot of sticky buns, and we need to work together towards healing." I say witha smug grin.

"Geeze Dena, trying to run me poor." He laughs running his hands through his hair.

"You could just do what Paedyn does and steal them while they're not looking." I giggle.

"Dena I have the money, but goodness I will be broke with you back around." He chuckles. "But I wouldn't have it any other way."

"So sticky buns."

"As many as you want Dena" He smiles placing a kiss on my forehead.
