When someone votes for your work, don't be shy to thank them. Just head to their profile and leave and friendly comment. Sometimes you can include a part stating "If you like my work, feel free to follow me. I will follow you back if ever."
That way, you did not just gain a friend but you gained a reader. You are not the only one who benefit from this but your reader benefited as well. He got a friend and reader as well. Be enthusiastic and interact with them so that you will be close friends.
Don't be rude. Be a kind person.
