"Ah, Mr. Severide you're awake." The doctor said joyfully as he walked into the room.
"Well I hope I am." Severide and the doctor both laughed at his statement. It had been a waiting game when Severide was brought in. Nobody knew if he would make it. He must've had something worth fighting for, or rather someone. When the doctor made his way to the hospital room the night after his surgery he saw a blonde woman walk into the room. He quietly watched the scene before him. The woman chatted with the sleeping man. She looked at him as if he was her whole world. The doctor was brought out of his thoughts when he heard soft footprints on the tile floor behind him.
"Hey you finally decided to wake up this morning. Or should I say afternoon?" Sylvie said laughing and bending down to kiss his forehead. "Oh hey doc what's up? Will he be able to leave soon?" She spoke quickly with optimism in her voice.
"I was actually going to tell him that he will be released tomorrow. He has been improving very well over the past few days." The doctor smiled at the two of him. "Unfortunately you will have to be off work for a few more days, but I'm sure you'll do fine."
"Are you sure I can't go back any sooner to work?" Severide tried to reason with the doctor but he wasn't getting anywhere.
"Sorry but we need to make sure you fully heal before you go back." The doctor said sternly.
"Kelly it's ok. I think you can handle it. I'll even take the next few days off in order to make sure you are ok." Sylvie smiled down at him hoping maybe that would change his mind.
"Sylvie you don't have to. I'm sure I'll be fine by myself."
"No. I'm staying with you and that's final." He could tell she was serious by the way she stood up and put her hands on her hips. She tried keeping a straight face but after staring at each other for a minute and started laughing.
"Ok it seems I may not win this battle." He threw his hands up in defeat. She bent down and kissed him on the lips.
"You bet I win." She whispered to him. Her whisper made him get chills all through his body. Her soft voice was a voice he wanted to keep hearing.
They were both so caught up in the moment that they both forgot the doctor was still in the room. He cleared his throat before speaking.
"Well it seems like you two both have this figured out so I'm going to go get yours papers ready for tomorrow." He smiled and left the two by themselves. They both looked at each other and started laughing.
"I now pronounce this awkward." Kelly said as Sylvie's laughter started to die down.
"I honestly forgot about him being here." Sylvie said while wiping the tears from her eyes from the aftermath of the laughing session. She then sat down on the bed next to Kelly silently staring at him and brought one hand up to lightly caress his cheek. "I honestly don't know what I would've down without you. No more drinking sessions together. No more chatting." She bit her lip to keep herself from crying again.
"Hey, there's no need to think like that now. I'm here and I'm not leaving anytime soon. Also I'm ready to go cause I can't stand hospitals." She chuckled as he said the last part. He brought his hand up to the hand that was still on his cheek.
"Good cause I'm ready to go too." After she said that she shifted on the bed to lie down next to him and rest her head on his chest. He gently stroked her hair as he thought about the beautiful blonde next to him. He was ready to go.
