Unexpected

Not Today

     "Are you sure you remember how to do the job lieutenant?" Tony was driving the truck and took a glance over at Severide.
     Severide chuckled in response, "I'll never forget this job."
     Once they arrived on the scene they saw an apartment building that once was standing, now crumbling to the ground from the fire that was ablaze. Unfortunately this building was right next to a school building which means they had to evacuate both buildings. The school was I good shape considering how bad the apartment looked. Teachers started running out of the building trying to herd children in front of them. If Kelly could describe the scene in one word it would be, chaotic. The scene reminded him of the call that was the second to last one Shay had with him. During that call he made a mistake that he couldn't forgive himself for, which was leaving someone behind. Luckily the young boy made it cause Kelly wouldn't be able to handle it.
     "We're ready Lieutenant!" Capp said snapping Kelly out of his thoughts.
     "You better be!" Looked at his fellow squad members and started barking orders to hem telling them what to do and where to go.
"It's good to have you back!" Tony told him.
Kelly gave him a slight nod and told everyone to move out. He was ready to be back doing the job he loves the most. If Kelly wasn't ever able to go back to his job he would feel lost. His life revolves around this job.
Casey and Hermann were both at the front door of the building ready to knock down the door. Each firefighter had put their masks on preparing for the smoke battle that was ahead. All members of truck took the bottom floor while members of squad took the top floors.
"Lieutenant! Be careful this time!" Capp yelled.
"Shouldn't be a problem Capp!" Kelly chuckled and turned to opposite way to head down the hallway. "Fire department! Call out!"
He knocked down any door he passed trying to find people. Suddenly he heard a faint cry for help in the last room. He ran to the room and knocked down the door. On the floor he saw a woman in her mid 30's coughing and yelling for help.
"Please! My baby! Save *cough* her!" The woman frantically pointed to the other room. Before Kelly moved he radioed for Capp to come escort the woman out while he went for the baby. Capp responded and soon enough he was there taking the woman downstairs. Kelly opened the door to the nursery and saw a baby that couldn't be more than 4 months old crying.
"Shhh.... It's ok you are going to see you mommy." Kelly tried cooing soft words to the baby before realizing that an explosion was coming towards them. He lunged to the ground covering the baby trying not to squish the young child. Once he looked toward the door he realized they wouldn't be able to get out that way.
"Hey Otis I'm going to need a lift up here. I have baby with me and we are trapped up here." He radioed down to the truck member waiting for a response.
"Copy that your ride is ready." Kelly still carrying the baby got of the window and started down the ladder. Once he got halfway down there was an explosion that had occurred right it the same room he just came from. He was glad he wasn't still in there with this little baby.
Once Kelly reached the ground he rushed over to Sylvie and have her the baby. She took the baby and started examining her. Sylvie said the child seemed good but they were still going to take her to the hospital to be checked up on. Kelly looked at Sylvie in awe at how lovingly she looked at the young child. Maybe they could have a little one once their relationship gets stronger. Kelly was snapped out of his thoughts when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"You ok?" Casey wanted to make sure his best friend was ok from his first day back.
"Never better." Kelly gave Casey a small smile and walked back over to the squad truck and helped the guys continue packing up he equipment. He was finally glad to be back at the one job he enjoyed the most.
