Chapter Four

"Who needs trains when I've got two perfectly good feet?" you say to yourself.

You walk further down the road, schoolbag bumping against your back, hardback book covers digging into your spine. You start to worry about how much homework you have to do tonight. There's never enough time to get it all finished, much to your teacher's annoyance. No one else in the class ever bothers to do their homework anyway, and half of your classmates don't even bother to show up to school.

"Not me." you say jauntily. "I'm a good person."

The dark, foreboding clouds quickly roll in. The heavens open up and send a tidal wave of water hurtling down to earth - and, unfortunately, on you. You screech at the sudden downpour and walk even faster, almost sprinting down the road. Rain spatters against your face and hair, getting in your eyes, temporarily blinding you. You keep running.

You're not much more than five minutes from home. You stop at the edge of the curb and look around. There are no cars racing down the road, so you assume it's safe to cross. You're only halfway across the road when you realize you probably should have looked both ways, not just to the right.

It's too late.

There's a blinding flash of light.

A squeal of breaks.

A scream. Your scream.

You're lying on the road, loud noises ringing in your ears. You don't know where you are or what's going on. All you can feel is the throbbing in your head and the dull pain in your chest.

It hurts, but you're still alive.

Just.
