Emily's POV

I groaned, in frustration. It had been a week since I've been here, and the Tanners had got me new clothes. My suitcase however was still small. I pulled on the zipper again. Realizing it was stuck on clothes, I shoved my clothes in harder. I then pulled once again. Finally it zipped all the way.

I propped my suitcase up against the wall.

"Emily ready to go?" I heard Mr.Tanners voice echo through the hall. I picked up my suitcase, and began rolling it through my room. I reached the stairway, and Mr.Tanner helped me bring it down. Alyssa was waiting by the door, with her bag, and doll in hand.

"Jonathon said he would meet me at the airport." I stated, as three of us got in the car. "Okay." Mr.Tanner said.

I leaned my forehead, on the cars window.

I could never just stay in one place, could I? Just a week ago I arrived, and already i'm leaving. I saw the small sprinkle of water, dripping down my window. Looking at the stop light, in front of us. The red light seemed blurry, through the rain. Every second seemed to pry at my skin, making me nervous. I was anxious to find out who this women, my mother was.

"Emily? Emily?" I snapped out of my small trance, and saw Mr.Tanner calling me. "What?" I asked. I realized I was just standing in the entrance, to the airport. "Are you coming in?" He asked. I nodded, and made my feet follow him, and Alyssa. I was so deep in thought, I started moving without thinking about it.

I sat down in the waiting area, with ticket in hand. I looked around trying to see if Jonathon was here, yet. I saw him walking away from the small women behind the counter. I waved a hand, trying to get his attention. He saw me and began walking my way.

"How you holding up?" He signed. "Okay. I guess." I signed back. He nodded, understanding. He sat next to me, and Mr.Tanner. "Well i'm gonna go. Good luck with your mother Emily. I do hope to see you again sometime." Mr.Tanner gave me a hug, which I returned. "See you sometime soon." I replied. He smiled, and got up. Alyssa, got out of his arms, and snuggled with me. I watched him walk out the front entrance.

I slouched, in my seat. Jonathon patted my shoulder. I looked over at him. "It'll be okay." He signed. I gave him a sly smile, trying to show my appreciation.

I felt a small tug at my shirt. I turned around, Alyssa's big eyes stared up at me. "Why is he using his hands, like that?" She asked. I laughed, a bit. "That's how he talks." I said, smiling. "But his hands, don't have a mouth." She said, confused. "Well each sign he makes, with his hands means a word or phrase." I explained. I gave her a second to think about that. "Kind of like, when I wave hi?" She asked. "Kinda." I said. She looked over at Jonathon, curiously. She then waved at him, and smiled. "Hello!" She said, waving faster. He waved back, and smiled too. He then signed, "I am.. J.O.N.A.T.H.O.N." Spelling out his name. "What does that mean, Emy?" She asked. "He said his name is Jonathon." Alyssa hopped off the seat, and walked over to him. She unzipped her bag, and took out piece of paper. I could hear the clanking of pencils, and pens.

Jonathon POV

I watched as she took out a piece of paper, then dug out a pen. She began drawing something on it. After she finished she held it, so I could see it. In funky letters, she spelled out her name. "ALYSSA". I smiled at her. I then showed her how to do her name in ASL.

She laughed, and then climbed up on my lap. I was a bit suprised, but held onto her. I then decided to hug the little girl. She was so cute, I couldn't help it! She hugged me back.

We had finally boarded the plane. Alyssa was excited, and took the window seat. Elizabeth sat in the middle, and I sat on the end. Alyssa gazed out the window, and watched the plane slowly begin moving. I watched her lips as she exclaimed the word "wow". She then, turned and watched the window again.

Emily's hands were gripping the side of the seat. Her breathing looked harsh, and her eyes were closed. I frowned, then realized she must be afraid of heights. Without thinking, I gripped her hand. She froze for a second.

I noticed what I did, and felt like an idiot. Wondering why I did, that I let go. I quickly retreated my hand, and turned to look away.

She opened her eyes, and looked at me. "Why'd you do that?" She asked. "Sorry I shouldn't have." I signed. She frowned. "No why'd you let go?" She asked again. "I mean you only meant it in a friendly gesture... right?" She asked. I smiled and nodded.

On the inside I knew I liked her. It was just a silly school crush, of course. But I was certain I liked her. She helped me, and understood me. She didn't just understand my signing, she understood how I felt. All the crap about boys being tough, and not soft isn't true. I could be tough, at times and rude. When it came to Emily, and my past with my father I was a huge softie. Not gonna deny it, cause it's true.

I reached my hand back to Emily. She took it, and closed her eyes again, breathing slowly. I smiled.
