I hear screaming coming from upstairs. I look in the mirror. I look only nine years old. Tears roll down my small face. Sniffles escape my nose and I turn around, facing my little brother.
They took us out of school today. Something about a doctor's visit. I figured it was for my dad, who is still screaming upstairs.
Chuck sits on the couch, coloring his kindergarten homework. His eyes close every time a screech sounds from upstairs. No one knows what's wrong with him. He's been acting like this for about a week, off and on screams. It's been impossible to get any sleep. Chuck picks up a green crayon and begins to color the bottom of the page.
I take a seat next to him, looking at his drawing. Trees line the middle, and pictures of animals and insects cover the page. He is an amazing drawer for his age.
"That's a pretty picture." I say.
He nods. "My teacher has pictures like these around her room. She says our backyard used to look like this." He says, remaining his attention on his art work.
