"Morning! Get up, I want to show you something." Phil said excitedly, kneeling on the bed next to Dan who had stayed at his last night after they'd seen a film, which was a more successful trip than last time they'd attempted to go to the cinema. Dan grumbled and flopped his feet out of bed. It was a Saturday morning, an early Saturday morning at that, and Dan would usually be asleep until the afternoon on a Saturday, but for Phil he could see his way to making an exception.
After breakfast Phil handed Dan his spare helmet, which Dan took still feeling queasy from his last motorbike experience. Dan stepped outside then turned and immediately jumped back inside, rushing off to get a coat. "It's bloody freezing." Dan moaned. Bundled up in coats they made their way down the road and climbed onto the bike. Dan wrapped his arms around Phil's torso, resting his head between Phil's shoulder blades, a serene grin spreading across his face.
"Hold on tight spider-monkey," Phil said.
"Oh bugger off, you're not Edward..." Dan mumbled.
Phil parked the bike in the car park behind an industrial estate and helped Dan climb off, his knees trembling slightly from the mix of adrenaline and fear. Phil took Dan's hand and led him around the front of the buildings. The air was chilly and whipped against Dan's exposed face, the wind started to make his eyes water and his nose go numb. Wishing he'd put on a scarf as well as a coat Dan shuffled closer to Phil, trying not to trip them up. Phil put his arm around Dan and pulled him closer, they were now walking in sync with one another.
"So where are we going?" Dan asked, peering up at Phil. He hadn't told Dan where he was taking him earlier this morning because he wanted it to be a surprise. It was a really important place for Phil, somewhere that he found his new life and was saved from the nightmares of his past. He wanted to show Dan where he found sanctuary and then explain to him why it was necessary in the first place.
"It's a surprise, I'll explain after you've seen it. It's possibly the most important place for me, somewhere that makes me feel safe and protected. I spent a lot of time here and I would like you to see it." Phil replied. The streets weren't too crowded and Phil seemed relaxed, which was unusual when they were in public and surrounded by people, so obviously he really did feel safe here.
Whilst they were walking Dan saw an old bus stop with a young couple sheltering underneath it. There was an poster pinned to the outer wall of the bus stop advertising a film, probably a romantic film judging by the cheesy photo of a woman gazing up into a beautiful man's face, but it wasn't this that caught Dan's eye it was the question under the title:
OBLIVIOUS HEARTS
"How far will you go for the one you love?"
Dan thought about the question, how far would he go for Phil? Well, he knew the answer to that straight away. He'd go as far as Phil needed him to go. He couldn't think of any possible situation that would prevent him trying to help Phil or make him happy.
"Are you okay, Dan?" Phil asked softly, noticing how Dan was staring into space with a glazed over expression, lost in the depths of his mind.
"I'm fine, sorry I was just thinking..." Dan replied, dragging himself back to the present.
"Thinking about what?" Phil didn't know whether he should be concerned.
"You. Me. Us..." Dan's voice drifted off. Phil was still watching Dan who had a small smile on his pretty lips. Phil leaned over and gave Dan a quick kiss on his cold lips, which was slightly awkward as they were still walking along the pavement, but sweet all the same.
Phil finally stopped and nodded his head to a building the other side of the road. He had taken Dan to what looked like a disused building, as Dan took in the sight of the dirty, cracking building he slightly narrowed his eyes in mild confusion. "Wow." Dan said, unimpressed as they crossed the road. "No offence, but I expected something a little more... Impressive?"
"Oh ye of little faith. It's what's inside that counts!" Phil countered, a childish twinkle in his powder blue eyes. Phil took Dan's hand and led him down the worn stone steps to what looked like a basement. "Just you wait," he teased.
They stepped through the shabby wooden doorframe, into a record shop. The walls were covered from floor to ceiling in posters and band t-shirts. Dan could immediately see the appeal it would hold for someone like Phil, which made him love it instantly. Phil knew it wasn't really Dan's scene but it was an important place for him. However, much to Phil's pleasure, he saw that Dan's mouth had dropped open at the sight. "Wow, okay so now I'm impressed." Dan said, his eyes wide and full of excitement, wanting to take everything in. "How did you find this place?" He said.
"I just stumbled across it. Do you really like it?" Phil said, sheepishly, not wanting Dan to be pretending to like it for Phil's sake.
"Phil, it's amazing." Dan said with such sincerity Phil actually believed him. "I don't think I've heard of any of these bands but this shop is so... Inviting? I don't know; it's just comforting to see all of the posters and tshirts on the walls, to run your fingers across the records and find something new and exciting. Music is full of emotion, and there are thousands of songs in here just throbbing with emotion, begging to be listened to and full of the promise of sympathy and understanding."
Phil laughed and practically dragged Dan to the 'Pop Punk' section and showed him an album called 'Save Rock And Roll' by Fall Out Boy. "I promise you'll love it!" Phil said, thrusting the album into Dan's hands.
After wandering around the shop for nearly half an hour they decided to make their way to a nearby family run coffee shop, which was something of a legend in these parts. They were walking towards the door when Phil stopped dead in his tracks, his grip on Dan's hand becoming so tight Dan feared for his fingers. The blood drained from Phil's face as his eyes locked with a giant of a man in the doorframe.
"Phil?" The man almost whispered in disbelief. Then an unpleasant smirk crept across his rough, brutish face. "What's a little bitch like you doing here?" His eyes trailed over the pairs entwined hands. "I knew you enjoyed it, you faggot." He said.
Phil's nostrils flared and he looked over at Dan, taking a deep breath, and with a courage that seemed to flow from his hand, Phil pulled him out of the shop and up the steps. Shoving the spare helmet into Dan's chest harder than he meant, Phil got onto the bike and when Dan was seated behind him he rode off, not saying a word in explanation and with no destination in mind.
