Chapter 26

Not too long after the attack of the terrorists, and the McGallens were reunited, I stalked aside with a brisk gait. Trey stumbled after me, still slightly in shock, trying to keep up with my pace. I ignored his complaints as I reached my new car, unlocking the door and yanking it open. My mind was reeling. Trey knows I'm a CIA agent now. Great. Just freaking great.

"Get in." I ordered in a sharp, icy tone.

Trey didn't protest or argue. Smart boy. I got into the driver's side while he climbed into passenger's. He buckled up and I shoved the key into the ignition. The engine kick started to life with a powerful roar that gradually descended to a purr. Trey looked impressed.

"Nice car." he said, toying with the radio.

I considered slapping his hand away and doing it myself, mainly because I hate him and it's my new car, but I resisted as I shifted the car into drive and drove out of the White House. A Macklemore song blared through the speakers of the car, which has pretty badass bass. Jonathan really knows how to buy a car. I kept my eyes on the road, weaving seamlessly through traffic. Damn. I love this new car! I bit back a smile. Suddenly, the top started lowering. I whipped my head to see Trey had found out where the top lever was. I grabbed his hand, hard, and glared at him in between glances at the road. He pulled his hand away, shaking it.

"Okay! I just thought I'd get some air in here! Dammit." he said, rubbing his hand and flexing his fingers.

I pulled the top back to normal, going back to the road and keeping my mouth shut. Trey and I were silent for a long while until he spoke up.

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"Where do you think we're going? The White House was just attacked by terrorists!" I snapped.

Trey held his hand up.

"I don't know! You're the driver!"

I rolled my eyes, describing Trey with very colorful choice words in my head.

"We're going to the CIA headquarters-"

"Really?" Trey interrupted.

"Yes, and you better be a good boy. Is that even physically possible?"

Trey chuckled, even though I wasn't joking. Honestly, is it  possible for Trey to behave? I should have Simon...Stop! Focus!

"I don't believe it is." Trey answered, a cocky expression on his face.

"Well you better try. These are my employers and colleagues and I'm not about to let my ex-boyfriend, who cheated on me for a slut, ruin my reputation. I swear, if you even put a toe out of line, I will kill you right then and there."

Trey swallowed nervously, his cocky grin falling and his Adam's apple bobbing. He looked what I'd never seen before on him. Scared. He nodded and sat back in his seat, looking out the window as we passed the Virginia-Washington DC border.

"Ember?" he asked again after ten more minutes of silence.

"What?" I asked, shifting lanes.

"I-I should apologize for what I did. I know you hate me, and I'm not saying we should get back together, but I had to say it. I'm sorry for what I did. You know, I think about it all the time. It makes me feel rotten inside."

At first my brain screamed "Liar!", but when I glanced at his sincere expression, I reconsidered. Trey is apologizing? It's like Ariana all over again! I took a deep breath, my fingers drumming on the steering wheel. Trey watched me expectantly.

"Trey, I don't hate you. I accept your apology." I answered, my tone gentle.

I saw him smile out of the corner of my eye. I glanced around the highway, watching the drivers. For a November day in the middle of the week, it was busy. Very busy. I watched everyone carefully, knowing the trek like the back of my hand. It's not long at all. Only, approximately without traffic, seventeen minutes. As soon as I thought I saw the maroon highway sign with "George Bush Center for Intelligence CIA FHWA" written on it in white lettering. Trey's eyes went wide when he saw it.

"You weren't kidding were you? You really are a CIA agent?" he asked, in awe.

I nodded, biting my lower lip.

"Yup." I answered, popping the "p" at the end.

"Wow. I never had you pegged as a secret agent." he answered.

I allowed a small smile to cross my lips.

"We learn something new everyday."

Our discussion ceased as I turned off the highway and drove to the main gates of my work. The Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia. Another smile crossed my lips. Trey's in my territory now.
