I picked up Jane as I heard the front door slam shut. I looked at my digital clock on my bedside table and sighed. It was six o’clock meaning my mum was home.

I headed to my door and pulled it open. The landing was quiet which surprised me as Jerrod and Conner had been making noise for the past hour. “Mummy,” said Jane.

“Yeah mummy is home,” I smiled at her as I headed out into the landing but making sure to close my door behind me. I turned right and headed down the stairs.

Once I reached the front passage I headed into the front room to find my mum entering the kitchen and I followed her.

The kitchen was a big size but also long with a line of tops to prepare food. The back door was near the far end of the kitchen which led out onto the patio.  We have a huge cooker which is really easy to use and very helpful since we have a big family to feed.

We have two sinks. One is normal and the one which most of us use. The other one is a small one which was put there by my dad about a year ago for Jane. We have a fridge freezer near the door as well.

We have a separate room for the washing machine and tumble dryer which is just to the right when you go out into the garden but it can also be gotten to through the dining room.

“Hey mum how was work?” I asked her.

My mother put the shopping bags on the side before she turned around and smiled at me. “Normal as it ever is James. How was school?”

“To be honest the same as normal too,” I smiled.

“So you got detention again?”

“I am sorry mum,” I began but she cut me short, “How many times do I have to ask you to try avoiding getting detention. I wish for you to have a future,” she said sadly.

“I try mum but by the time I have her lesson I am so tired and it’s so boring too,” I said to her.

“I know it is hard James but it is only until your father returns home,” she smiled.

“Mum how many times do I have to say this? Dad isn’t coming back. He abandoned us and we shouldn’t even allow him to come back. Tiffany or Jerrod should go get a job to help so you don’t have to work nights,” I said to her.

“It is not as simple as that sweetheart.” I watched as she began to put the shopping away and I kissed Jane on the forehead before I stepped forward and took my mother’s arm to stop her so she would look at me.

“I love my dad. I miss him too. All I have left of him is now a broken money box but we need to move on. He isn’t coming back and we shouldn\'t wait around for him. We need to survive without him and prove to him that we no longer need him.”

“He will come back we just have to wait a little longer.” I stared at my mother. This conversation never got anywhere but I still had to continue to try and get through to her because one day it may go through.

“How long though, a week, a mouth....when? We waited nearly a year and he hasn’t come back. He left with one thing in his mind. Time travel mother and to everyone except you, we know he cares more about that then you. He craves that more or wants it more then he cared for us ever. Why can’t you see that?” I shouted louder then I had planned too.

Jane started to cry. I took a deep breath before I lowered my voice. “I am sorry mum. I didn't mean to shout it’s just we can't go on like this forever.”

My mother took Jane from me which made her stop crying. I felt terrible for making Jane cry but sometimes it was the only way to get my mother to listen. I hated doing it but I seemed to be the only one to see the problems with our lives.
