The best characters are the ones who have a bit more to them than what meets the eye. The ones who have depth to their personality. If you have a one dimensional character, there is nothing special about them. More importantly you can't do much with them.

However take a character who secretly is very confident and clever, then you can surprise the reader when your character flourishes in a tricky situation. As the plot unravels, go deeper into your character and have their 'hidden elements' come out.

By the end of your book, the reader should feel like they know your character extremely well. That means they know all about your character, all their secret qualities and flaws. Having depth to a character both benefits your plot and how interesting your chapters are.

Maybe before writing, plan what kind of person you character is and then afterwards plan what your character hides about them self (e.g. shyness, anger etc)
