Phil's mouth dropped open as Dan produced the box.
Dan cleared his throat nervously. "I- um... Well... I'm not really sure what to say here... Ok... So... When we first met, I didn't expect anything to happen between us. I thought that you'd dismiss me at best, but you genuinely seemed to like me..."
He paused for a second, thinking, and Phil smiled, and picked up the speech. "The best decision I ever made was to be friends with you, because if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have been up on the roof, and we'd never have had the picnic, and you'd never have kissed me."
"That was probably the best mistake I've ever made," Dan said with a laugh. "If it weren't for that, we'd have gone through life trying to pretend that the butterflies we got when we were around each other were just nervousness, and we wouldn't be here today."
Again, he stopped, looking scared that he was going to say something wrong, so Phil decided to keep talking. "If anything good came out of our... holiday... it was that we aren't just some average couple any more."
Dan smiled. "I guess we have some kind of bond now, that other people don't have. It takes a lot to break apart two people who've almost died together. Petty arguments can't ruin our relationship now."
"I mean, the fact that we're in love helps a bit."
"I guess it does," Dan laughed. "And Phil Lester, because we're in love, will you do me the honour of accepting this ring?"
Phil beamed. "I will. Wait, aren't you meant to be down on one knee?"
Dan went bright red. "I was too scared to get a wedding ring," he mumbled, "even though you've never refused me anything and I doubted you'd refuse me here. So I guess this ring is just to hold the place of the wedding ring until that comes along?"
Phil couldn't stop smiling. "And there definitely will be a wedding ring."
That was when the tears came. As Dan was sliding the ring onto Phil's finger, and then kissing Phil gently, and telling him that there was nothing he loved more than seeing him smile.
Then they were admiring the ring. The sun glinted off it, and made the tiny infinity signs, and the miniature diamonds inside of them, sparkle.
It was only that night when Phil noticed the tiny words engraved on the inside of the band.
